Heading to OK to go goose hunting next week. What shells to buy?

My son and I are headed to OK at the end of next week to go goose hunting with a few buddies and their sons. Supposedly we will be shooting decoying birds according to the guy we are going with. My question is do I buy 3" BB or #2? I have one buddy saying BB and the other saying heavy steel (whatever the hell that is). I've never been goose hunting and the one who goose hunts all the time is the one saying is isn't sure what he buys and he gets heavy steel.

Depends
What will your fun pattern best? Ok is always windy so imo err on the heavier shot size. Would pattern asap and go from there. Once you pop the layout those birds move 5 yds per wing beat.

For geese I try to shoot 1 3/8th oz. which is a heavier load than 1 1/4 oz which is more typically found on a Walmart shelf. You have to read the label and understand what you are looking for.
The brand doesn't really matter to me.

Ah, yeah, pellet weight differences. Great advice.

Speed for ducks and payload for gooses. I have killed plenty geeses with #4 2-3/4” but Ok wind will blow that shot all over the place.

3” BB if all you’re hunting is geese. Nothing wrong with 2s though. I like to hunt with 2s if I know there will be ducks and geese. You can’t go wrong with either one, BB will just give you a bit more of an edge at distance.
If you’re shooting them in the head it generally won’t matter how big the shot is.
ETA: Also, I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure Hevi Steel is just hevi-shot branded steel with a little higher velocity. Nothing heavier about it except the velocity and the price tag.

I've killed geese with Migra #2/4s, heavy metal (hevi-shot's bismuth mix) #3s, BBs and 20 gauge #2. If you're getting decoying geese and taking shots while they're cupped anything #2 and above should knock them down.

You gonna work your butt to put out decoys. But there are a lot of geese in Ok. And at times the ducks are right there with the geese.

I wish you the best but I question anyone that is clueless to what shells they use pretty fricking hard.
Personally I'd buy a couple of different boxes, its probably not going to make a huge difference either way but why risk it?
Any reason you are only using 3"? I've used 3.5" T and BBB on Canadians in the midwest and there were days the bigger birds seemed to shrug those off. Given you get birds set in the deeks you can kill them with 2 3/4" 4's. So like I said, it really depends but I would go prepared and I know shells are expensive.

Def 3” and I would shoot 2’s or BB.
I like hevi hammering. Been using that for ducks and geese the last two season.
Hevi Hammering and a Kicks Full Choke is a deadly combo. ESP if u like to shot them far.

You question why someone who has never hunted geese before and is going for the first time is questioning what shells? I’ve asked around and was given mixed results so wanted to ask the OB.
And 3” because that’s all my gold hunter and SX4 can handle.

I've heard #4 buck will wad them up, especially if it's out of a 10ga

The 2’s will fold decoying geese.

I always use either Hevi Steel or Heavy Metal brand shells for waterfowl. The bismuth shot works well too, but is not worth the increased $. For geese I wouldn’t bother with use BB shot in either 3” or 3 1/2” if your gun is chambered for those.
Y’all should have a good time….good luck!

You’ll be shooting dinks mostly.
3” #2 or even #4 steel. No need to overthink your shell selection. You can melt them with 5 shot if they’re in the decoys. Kent fast steel 2.0 is a great choice that’s not crazy expensive.
I personally shoot 3” #2 steel and I hunt everything from cranes to cacklers from September to end of January.
Only time I really switch up is if we’re on a bunch of cacklers, I’ll drop to 4 or 5 shot just for more pellets same for when we start with spring snows.

If money does not matter Heavy X11 or I call X2 in 4 shot is the deadliest if want 2 shot go for it we kill Specs with 6 shot and it crushes them.
