If you surf fish, watch out for sharks. Ive fished the surf on GI for decades and these were the first I've seen up close.

:omg:

No offense brah but there's been tons of sharks in the surf around GI for years. When the fish weren't biting in the summer we'd bring a big rod out to the surf with some cut bait and catch sharks. You can catch those 3-4 footers all day long. I always loved watching the reactions of people who were swimming nearby who would be in disbelief that there were sharks out there with them.

So not a great morning. I had Live shrimp and croakers. Tried down by bridge side first and that didn't turn out well but a couple guys were catching a few trout.

Left there about 7:30 and went to a spot between bridge side and the state park and climbed on the rocks. An old man was fishing with live croakers but free lining them, just a hook. I finally just asked him what he was doing because they wouldn't touch croakers or shrimp on the bottom or on a cork. The only thing they went after was the free line croaker. He limited out but I only ended up with 12 because they shutdown at 9 when the tide quit moving.

The were really picky this morning at least where i was at. Prob going to Elmers island this afternoon see if it's any better. The fish were definitely there though.

Keep at it. Thanks for the report. At least you didnt strike out. For every good trip I've had there are 2-3 less than stellar ones. Try some skinny curve back style crank baits.

I fished Elmer's Sat a.m. I found the bite to be very slow and the fish to be small. I used a 3" Gulp shrimp on a jig head. A couple of weeks ago, they went crazy for them, but not this weekend. Like others have said, you should have your line in the water 30 mins before sunrise.

I eventually went and got some live croakers, but they were all dead within 30 minutes... ugh. Caught a huge stingray. But by then, the bite was finished That was my first time trying those. Not nearly as hardy as shrimp.

I then switched over to shrimp and fished the road in the afternoon. Caught quite a few small trout, but no nice ones.

I'm pretty inexperienced w/ fishing down here, but go prepared w/ several options. If they've quit biting by 7:30, give it up and fish other bank spots.

I was doing this when things get slow on the boat. Had some dude surf fishing not far from me when I hooked up. That shark was a bullshark that was an easy 7' and it started jumping. Out the corner of my eye, I saw said surf fishermen running on top of the water to the shore.

I'm still debating going hit the surf there tomorrow. I'd have to buy a bunch of shite today though.

Cmon Boat, sounding like you're looking for excuses not to go. You can do it. Don't let one bad report discourage you.

"I had assholes doing this when I was anchored and fishing. Some real screwed up people that should not be able to run a boat. Man, I wanted so bad to break out the 357."

Best story I can tell about these assholes is: About 40 years ago a friend and I were anchored in the marsh out of NOLA catching nice trout. Assholes anchored RIGHT in the area we were casting and started casting towards us!
My friend told me to cool it when i started raising hell with them and tied on a LARGE, triple treble hook lure. He hit their motor on the first cast, the front of the boat on the second cast amidst all sorts of howls and cussing.
He apologized profusely and said he would get more accurate as he had been casting a lighter lure. He didn't have to cast a third time!

Got the rod. I'd be putting off a lot of stuff I should be doing instead. This is a tough one. I need a good fishing trip though. The last few sucked.

Pretty sure free lining them is just a hook and the bait with nothing else.

I keep telling people to use more shallow running crank and suspending baits for the beaches in the summer but they never listen.

Probably. I've used a minus 1 stretch before and had success. My father in law has taught me a lot on fishing down there. I've never seen him throw sparkle beetles and he NEVER uses live bait . . ever. He will throw soft plastics on occasion but mostly in the marsh when he uses those. He has a hat he wears when fishing the surf. It's got about 30 different hard baits hanging around the top of it. I go for the over the shoulder tackle tray.

I've said before. I love the Mirrodine by mirrolure. The only color you need is the pink back with chartreuse belly, the others are good too but this color has always been best for the gulf waters. Also like the skinny shallow running baits with a slight curve to the back.

We caught a bunch on a rogue this past winter. That and a bomber bait that had a similar shape and action.

Also good are the jointed swimming baits and long A's. They use to sell these cheap little renegade baits at Walmart. 2.5 or 3 inches long or so. I still have a bunch. Caught a lot of specks on them. One of the biggest specks I've seen caught was on one of those renegades (clown color). The other biggest trout I've seen caught was on a suspending catch 2000.

One word of caution about doing this, be extremely careful and not just the obvious not slipping on the rocks.

A couple years ago, a buddy and I had just gotten out there and we saw a bunch of bait on the other side of one of the jetties, so we walked out there and as I was about to step onto the jetty when my leg slipped into a hole and my knee bumped against the jetty. I didn't think anything of it, but when I brought my knee out out of the water I had blood all over. Fortunately, I walked back to the truck, toweled it off, and continued on with my day, but I was pretty fortunate, had it been any worse I probably would have needed stitches. As it is, I still have two nice reminders on my left knee. (Also probably fortunate I wasn't human shark bait).
