Hawk question

I have a new lab pup and she stays in a kennel in the garage at night and I have been putting outside during the day in a small yard that is fenced and this morning I went check in her before I left for work and there was a hawk on my corner fence post. My question is can a hawk get a hold of her and carry her off or kill her. She is about 8-10 lbs. I am not sure what type of hawk it was. It was brownish red and the tail had white stripes on it. I think it was a Coopers Hawk. TIA

I rarely see hawks around my house anymore... weird

Yes it can.
I’m not saying you should shoot it but you should attempt to encourage it by any means necessary to never return again to your yard ever again for eternity.
Do not tell anyone even your family members that you encouraged it to leave..

Won't be able to carry her off because of physics. Probably wouldn't even attack her, but I'm sure it's a possibility.

This guy certainly isn't going to do it.

That hawk wasn’t hanging out just because your fence post was a nice place to roost.
I’d keep a close eye on the dog until it got a little bigger and would not let it outside without supervision until then.

A Cooper's Hawk will not be able to pick up your pup. Do you have a bird feeder in your yard? That might be why it is hanging around.

Could be, but Cooper's have a bluish gray body.

I had a Cooper's clear out a tree of house finches the other morning. The bird came from nowhere and caused havoc among those poor little birds.

I do but there hasn't been feed in in it for a couple of months. I did find a bunch of feathers last week on the other side of my house. looked like a crime scene.

If you have to leave it outside unattended and your pen is small enough cover the pen with chicken wire. If you do this be sure you secure the seam across the top.
Good luck...

Red Tails will mess with them in a big way.
Here's a Cooper's very unhappy with the decoy

Carry off, nah. But I sure have had a cooper's hawk eating a 6 lb chicken on the ground in my yard. Being carried off may not matter much to the dog.
Then again, I've also seen them get their asses kicked by smaller chickens after chasing doves into the coop, so who knows. I do know those talons could put some nice size holes in a small dog.

No.
A hawk can carry about half its body weight. A very large red tailed hawk weighs about 3 pounds.
A huge female Cooper's hawk will weigh less than half that.
The vast majority of "hawk ate my dog" stories are made up when a person can't find their dog and happen to see a hawk nearby. Unless it's a tiny puppy, no hawk is flying off with it. A large, very hungry hawk MIGHT kill and eat a very small dog, but it would eat it on the ground.
And, although Cooper's hawks are opportunists, they're bird specialists. They're not going to try to catch a canine predator, other than maybe a newborn.

Although this sounds more like a red shouldered hawk. The same applies to them. They're smaller than red tails and specialize in reptiles and amphibians, although they'll also eat rodents and birds.

Yeah, but Accipiters mainly target birds.
I recall an interesting journal article that examined the anti-predator response of chickens to silhouette cutouts of hawks. They'd cower/run from a Buteo cutout (red-tailed hawk types), but would get aggressive towards the cutout of a Accipiter (Cooper's types).
Adult female Cooper's Hawks are about the size of an adult male Red-shouldered Hawk.
