Have we past the point of no return for the cane harvest?

Quite a few acres still not cut around my area. Has it soured after the freeze? Will they cut
It anyway or just plow it under? I don’t think I’ve ever seen this much cane still standing on NYE eve.

If I remember right I think Cora Texas is only going to run for another week or so. I do remember last year seeing some cane still standing after the mills shutdown. They just cut the cane and let it regrow for next year.

They were still going at it this week in Avoyelles after the two coldest nights. I will have another report tomorrow.

They were cutting this morning in Lafourche. I think the mill in Raceland is still open as of now but I’d say this weekend at the absolute lasted, will be use it or lose it.
I have a cousin that farms in Assumption that said they have so much sugar this year, it’s unbelievable.
Regardless, they will still claim to be broke.

Raceland mill is open until Jan 10, I believe, and they will be done farming that property in a week or so.
I know just about every farmer around my area and they are all going to do well this year. 50-60tons of cane coming off an acre. Usually 30-40 tons is the high side. Weather was so dry that they had to slow their harvest to let the mills keep up.

Cora is finished on the 10th unless they run into any long term problems.

Raceland is taking cane until the 5th or 6th and will finish up 3 days later unless they have issues. Heard record breaking numbers from Cora, Lafourche, and Raceland for daily, weekly, and total tonnage.

They've got loaded trailers sitting in a yard off Rosedale Road waiting to ship to the mill- Alma Plantation I would guess. Does that cut cane go bad or is it only the uncut cane thats vulnerable?

A cane farmer told me that any cane that was frozen must be processed within 10 days. He also said any cane that was frozen is only made into molasses (versus raw sugar or other products).

A couple of years ago, some farmers that could not get their cane out left it in the field standing. They fertilized it in April and then cut it the following harvest. Was surprised that went well. But we also didn't have a hard freeze that year. I think the only mill closed is Lafourche, most are shutting down next week. A friend of mine saying they will finish on the 7th which is the latest they went in years.

I’m not calling BS as I’m clueless, but is that number right? 100,000 lbs of sugar per acre?
ETA: New mind misread. I see that’s cane now. That’s that work out Tina’s far as sugar goes?

Just went through Vermilion Parish, and you can smell the sour cane.
Tough for those guys. Can't imagine how much money lost that is.
