Pawn shop where I did my old AR (damn boating accident) charged $20 cash and the sticker the dude put on said the purchase (transaction) was 1 cent. Dude made $20 in 10 minutes as he was on the phone dealing with another customer.

The boat insurance companies are barely clinging to life at this point.

I went to Willis Arms, that was the easiest $20 he made all day.

Same. Its free money. Took him 5 minutes, he was more than happy to do it, we bullshitted for a while and I sent him some gun repair referral business. Everyone wins.

In fairness the store does have to maintain possession on that paperwork and be able to produce the 4473 if some government agency request it for the life of the business. It's not completely a 10 minute transaction.

But its the same paperwork they are holding onto anyway with there other sales...it takes just about zero effort. I get why they would do it...but its kinda dick to actually do it. I am lucky to have a friend with a dad thats a FLL so I dont have any hassles or fees.

Seriously that has to be all profit for them to do a 20 dollar transfer. 100%profit margin. What else in the store is 100% margin?

this is completely untrue. The $20 hardly covers the actual cost of doing the transfer. From a business stand point filling out the 4473 is not the only thing that goes into offering to do transfers. There is an endless amount of time spent communicating with transferees and sending dealers, unpackaging and processing firearms, time taken away from sales associates that could be spent on customers purchasing from the shop or completing other task that are required throughout the day, over head from running the shop and most of all storing your paperwork for the required 20 years. That only covers the cost off the top of my head.

It is not uncommon for some shops to charge very high rates for transfers because for them it is not worth the $20 or however much since they could be making more money spending their time doing other things.

Remember, without having a LGS you wouldn't be able to get anything transferred in. So, support your LGS. THey are transferring a product in from a competitor as a FAVOR to you. No where in the ATF regs does it say that a dealer is required to accept firearms from competitors and do transfers. Where else can you go where it is OK to purchase something from a direct competitor and they help you out. That would be like me purchasing ammo from Cabelas and doing in-store pick up at Walmart because it's closer for me. Or getting the Chevy dealership to order me a new Ford truck for a nominal $20 fee.

Food for thought.

Also, as far as I know, you can't have transfers done at Cabela's and Academy.
They know it's a waste of time and resources.

I have heard that Hebert's does not do them, plenty of places that do

I do not have a FFL, but if I did, it would not be worth my time to do it for $20

I didn't mind paying $50, but $35 seems more reasonable.

I usually pay $30. Give me a break about it not being worth your time. First off, it brings a customer into your store which often brings more purchases. 2nd, lol at taking your employees away from doing something better. Last time I went in there was one other customer and 3 employees twiddling their thumbs. Its not like shopping for guns and ammo needs a ton of hands on customer service.

You can google FFL in your area and often times there are guys that do it at their homes for $25-30.
