everything you say is true, and if you or hebert's or anyone else doesn't want to do transfers then that is your and their prerogative. on the other hand, however i will just use me as an example...the shop i originally did just transfers with is so accommodating and so friendly that subsequently i have used him to order four new firearms in the past two years, at slightly but not outrageously higher prices that i could have got off the 'net

food for your thought

The closest LGS to me actually doesn't do FFL transfers. I asked a guy who works there why they didn't do it. His response was they didn't want the hassle.

I was surprised that somebody wouldn't do it, even if you charge $30 i'll still go to you since it's closest place for me to go. I've purchased 3 handguns there before since they get in a decent stock of glock blue label. But, why not take the free advertisement and potential new customers by accepting FFL transfers.

That guy who denied you just lost a lot of business and I'm sure this isn't the only message board that will hear about it. What a dumbass

I charge $10 for handguns and receivers and $20 for rifles. This does not cover my cost of doing transfers, but I look at the loss as a marketing expense. The benefit being it brings in your exact demographic whereas a billboard or other traditional form of advertising is not as efficient.

Using you as an example, you have supported your LGS as I hope my transfer customers do in the future as well.

I was simply trying to explain how just because all the customer sees in 10 min of paperwork there is much more to consider in the overall cost of doing a transfer. Just like it it is the capitalist right for online retailers to play the volume game and selling for just over cost, it is the LGS dealers capitalist right to not accept transfers because he can make better money doing other things with his time.

ETA: it is also your capitalist right to choose not to shop somewhere. And if his business plan is sound and time is truly better spent not accepting transfers he will flourish. If not he will fail.

2nd, lol at taking your employees away from doing something better. Last time I went in there was one other customer and 3 employees twiddling their thumbs.

This is why the accept transfers. The employees there do not have something better to do with their time. You have only helped prove that point.

THey are transferring a product in from a competitor as a FAVOR to you. No where in the ATF regs does it say that a dealer is required to accept firearms from competitors and do transfers. Where else can you go where it is OK to purchase something from a direct competitor and they help you out. That would be like me purchasing ammo from Cabelas and doing in-store pick up at Walmart because it's closer for me. Or getting the Chevy dealership to order me a new Ford truck for a nominal $20 fee.

I was onboard with everything you said until this part. We wouldn't be in the unfortunate position of asking you to do this for us if it weren't for the government. So let's blame them for it. You certainly never want to blame a customer or view your customer in a bad light because they choose to shop somewhere else. I've had tons of business over the years because I was still nice to people that didn't do business with me.

Whoa same team, man. I willingly take in all transfers for most of the time the cheapest rate in town. I don't hold it against a customer for seeking out a good deal or treat them poorly when they come in.

I agree, as have I. That's why I do it. Again, I was just trying to illustrate the process from an FFL's perspective for the people who think that it's just a 5 min process and 100% profit. The local gun shops that do it, do it as a favor. It is not a part of their business model and if it is a big part they will fail because the margins are not there. The guys who do transfers as a business model do it for extra cash and typically do it out of their house and have a regular day job or are retired because just doing transfers and the occasional gun sale would not support the overhead of a true brick and mortar shop.

Hard to make people understand when you have employees you have to cover the cost of their pay, benefits etc, unless you've been there.

Heberts declined

I seem to recall some old Hebert's threads on Bayou Shooter. People that I knew well, and respected, had serious issues with owner. (Not FFL related --customer service related.)

Maybe it's better now. Haven't been in there in a long while.
