My wife says it’s “stupid” to leave a Glock on top of the fridge in my kitchen. There is a small space between the top of the fridge and the cabinets above it. Keep in mind there is no round in the chamber, but the magazine is loaded. She’s worried because we have kids in the house (8,10,12yrs old) two of them are boys who regularly hunt and handle guns with me and all three have been lectured to never touch a gun in the house. They have no idea the gun is there. I say she’s being overly cautious and saying it’s “stupid” is wrong.

What say the OB?

I’ll say this. My GF who is in her 20s now grew up with her and her sister with guns scattered throughout the house. They knew it was their arse if they touched one. They also were raised hunting and fishing.

Boys may be a little more adventurous though

ETA: I’d be more concerned about their friends honestly. I did not grow up with guns in the house.

Risk vs. reward.

What are the chances you'll need it and be able to get to it, vs. the chance one of your boys go looking, find it, and start playing.

Sounds like your boys are knowledgeable enough, and may not have that curiosity if they are allowed to use them responsibly outside the house. I know when I was that age, I wasn't gun adept, and would have gone playing.

I struggle with the same scenario. I don't have kids, but my nieces and nephews are over often enough and I ask them to stay out of our bedroom without an adult being in there due to guns being in a couple of strategic areas.

I can see 2 pistols from where I'm sitting in my living room. My kids have shot and been around guns since they were big enough to handle one. It would really suck for someone who breaks in both my boys know how to handle a pistol.
I don't trust other people's kids in my house with the guns visible. If people are coming over I put my guns up except for my carry pistol which I usually carry all the time..

At those ages, I'd be worried about them telling one of their friends...

2 things - can you not tell the cheerins? Also, dont keep it unloaded. The adrenaline dump that hits when someone comes kicking in your door will be so severe that you might lose fine motor skills needed to retrieve, rack, and get good sight alignment without hitting any loved ones. Eliminate some of that by keeping it loaded.

This is my exact scenario and thoughts.

Yeah the kids don’t know it’s there and are never left alone enough to find it much less play with it.

The entire point of this post is it think it’s uncalled for for my wife to call me “stupid” for leaving it there.

My apologies. Reading is hard on Fridays. Tell your sammich maker to focus on her cheese slices and thank you later after you destroy a home intruder.

in reality, I think it's a conversation y'all have to have. Mine wasnt a fan so I just kept it on me when I was inside till she got use to seeing it laying every where. Then she asked me to put it on the fridge after a few years.

I'm in my office working right now. It's a spare bedroom upstairs.

It's also my reloading room. I have around 15 guns within reach.

I'd never leave a gun around where anyone else could get it. A kid's friend. Burglar. Needs to be on you, within your reach or locked up at all times. With kids of any age in the house, it's more of a concern. Just the wife and me now in our house but they're in the safe or with me.

There are plenty of good safes out there (like biometric ones for example) where your reach is almost instantaneous.

And, for the record, I don't think spouses should call each other "stupid" despite the concern or refer to as such for decisions made. Words can be unintended, but hurt.

I think this is a bad idea. Instead, I taught my kids gun safety and to respect the damage a gunshot can cause. Kids want to touch the the things you tell them not to just because the intrigue. I would teach them exactly how to handle a firearm and the 10 commandments of gun safety.

Just my .02

I think it's actually a pretty creative place to stash a pistol. It's out of sight and fairly easy o get to.

Oh my kids have had extensive experience with guns and safety. We hunt all the time. I’m not worried about the kids, I'm honestly not. Just don’t appreciate being called stupid by someone who has a sixteenth of the gun knowledge, respect, and experience I do. I’m trying to show her it’s not stupid in our current scenario with our kids and our home. Maybe for someone else with less experience and less experienced kids.

Just not worth it. My guns stay locked up and unloaded but that’s just me.

10-4. Like you, for lack of better word, I pounded gun safety into my kids' heads. My son has been hunting in a stand by himself since he was 9 and sleeping with a pistol in his night stand since he was 13.

My dad called me and my brother in his room when I was around 8 or 9 and had a talk about guns. I thought he was going to tell us not to touch them. Instead he told us we knew where they were, how to use them, and we could go shoot whenever we wanted.

Of course times have changed and we lived way out in the country, but I want my kids to feel the same sort of trust that we did.

i deliberately leave a pistol on my kitchen counter routinely with my kids around. they don't even pay attention to it. I would not have it out if friends are over (which is hardly ever).

I may actually be a little more cautious when my boy gets older, not sure you can trust adolescent boys. little frickers.

Yep, same here, my 8yr old and 12yr old both got a deer this year, squirrels, ducks, etc. I’m not worried about my kids and guns. I’m cautious but not paranoid. My wife evidently thinks I’m stupid though.
