I originally said that it could possibly happen, accidentally. I can only explain it to you, I can not understand it for you.

God willing, you never find out that your wife was correct!

8-12 year old me would probably touch that gun even though dad told me not too. I would take my arse whopping IF i got caught

Somebody sees the gun, grabs it, chambers a round, accidentally shoots gun.

This isn't complicated.

TEST: how would you and wife feel if they did the unexpected and one of them ends up room temp? Make your own decision with that in mind.

Way out of his ability to comprehend. I feel sorry for his family.

I didn’t worry so much about my kids. I worried about friends they would have over and what might happen.

I absolutely would not leave that gun there. It can be found even if it’s unlikely. At that age, we’d play hide and seek in the house and a kid might find it while climbing around.

Just don’t take the chance. Get a little pistol safe for it. One that’s quickly accessible via fingerprint or code.

Same here. It’s fricking foolish and lazy not to do this if there are kids in the house. Why even take the chance? Get a lockbox, keep it loaded and chambered, and not have to worry.

I keep my long guns locked and unloaded but they’re pretty quickly accessible too but my loaded pistol is right there in my nightstand in a lockbox. Can grab it in seconds bc it’s fingerprint or code. No keys to fumble with.

Here is something I have been doing for several years now with 2 young kids. They have been taught to never ever touch one of my guns if they happen to see one when I am not around. I have an old Cross-man bb pistol that at first glance looks like a real gun, kids have no idea its not a real gun.Every couple months i pull it out and leave it on the kitchen counter for a couple days. When I come home from work as soon as I come in the door I act angry and say that I can tell my gun has been moved and I want to know who the hell touched my gun. Both kids adamantly deny that they touched it, they say they know better than to touch my gun and that their mom must have moved it when she was cleaning. Those kids wouldn’t dare to touch that bb gun.

First rule of gun safety around children: don’t keep guns where children can get to them-especially loaded ones or those with loaded magazines.

I don’t care how well trained you think your children are, lock the guns up. At some point in time, a child or his/her friend, is going to do what children do and screw around with something they shouldn’t. God forbid it’s the gun you left laying around.

They make plenty of quick-access safes these days. Buy one if you want quick access to your pistol for self defense.

Somebody? Who? It’s my home. I don’t let random “somebody’s” in it.

Chambers a round? My kids physically cannot. So that leaves me or my wife who refuses to touch a gun.
So, again I’ll ask, how would a round get chambered and kill someone? If I’m not doing it, my kids cannot do it, then who? I’ve already said I put the gun away when guests are in my home. Can’t you just kinda see my point here?

The gun won’t chamber itself and pull its own trigger. Someone has to.

Your 8, 10 and 12 year olds don’t have the physical strength to rack a Glock? Do you seriously think that?

Without delving into the debate on if it's "stupid" or not, I propose a different solution. Buy one of those shelves that can hide a gun. Put a contact sensor that alerts you if opened. I think anyone would agree that's more secure than the current situation.

Ok. I don’t buy it. I was racking a 1911 at age 12.

Beyond that fact, do you not think they will grow stronger? Do you not think they will keep trying because that’s what children do?

You came to this board asking for opinions. You got them, though you may not like them.

Good luck to you. I hope I’m wrong and everything turns out OK. I’m afraid your wife is right, though.
