Do you have to pull the firing pin back to cock it? I don't know if that will help id it or not, but that's what it looks like to me.

No when you poul the bolt back it is cocked with no safety.

Looks like a JC Higgins.
That would be my guess, also.

The ATF requires rifles have the caliber marked on the barrel, which would explain your markings of .22 short, long and long rifle. it's strange there is nothing else.

angus,
I just spent about 15 minutes googling "22 lr bolt action tube fed rifles," but didn't find anything conclusive. Action kinda looks like a JC Higgins model 103, except the very rear of the bolt is slightly different. Since it doesn't have a manufacturer's name on it, I bet it was a "store brand." Years ago, a number of guns were made by gun manufacturers (usually Mossberg, Marlin, Stevens, Savage and such, but sometimes Remington or Winchester) but sold department stores, hardware stores and discout stores (I once bought a 22 Mag from a "TG&Y" store!)as their store brand. A few that I remember are: Western Auto-"Revelation", I think; Sears-"JC Higgins" and "Ted Williams"; Montgomery Ward-"Western Field." Some interesting info here:

If no one here knows what it is, I'd next try googling pictures of some of the old "store brands" 22's. Next, I'd try some other gun forums, such as:

Your parish library might could get you a copy of "Gun Trader's Bible" or other such reference, as well.
Good luck. Would be interesting to know some of the stories that gun could tell!
ETA: The gun was made before 1968 as the Gun Control Act of 1968 for the firt time made it mandatory for serial #'s and name of manufacturer to be on the gun.

Thanks for the help guys in the thousands of photos I have looked through there is one other thing I found that sets it apart from the models I have seen. It's the screw that mounts it to the stock all others I saw were more like a knob with a slot this one has this

That is very similar to a Stevens single shot that I have. The only real difference is the tube fed magazine. I'm not sure about the screw in the bottom. I'll have to look when I get home.

plunger, bolt, and trigger look the same but the stock seems different as does the trigger guard. I may be misremembering though. I haven't "looked" at it in a while, I've shot it just haven't paid too much attention to the details.

angus,
I think the odd looking screw attaching the bottom of the stock to the action is a type of screw used many years ago. Some features varied from "store gun" version to the manufacturers regular version, including the stock, gun finish, barrel length, sight etc. For "store guns," the manufacturer frequently saved money by using lesser quality parts. Just gets more interesting.

I have tried to think of everything that would help identify it and the only information I know that hasn't been said was at the same yard sale he bought a Harris and Richards topper m48 with an I beginning the serial number. That means it was built in 1948 so I was thinking they could possibly be in the same time frame.

I got one of them Stevens single shots. That was the first gun I was allowed to carry by myself. My thumb had a big callaus on it from shooting a few thousand rounds a summer with it. Lots of snakes and dillos succumbed to it

I continue to be amazed there is no name anywhere.

Just a little update. I called the gunsmith and swallowed my pride and asked what it was. His exact words were it is a very early model marlin that was used at carnivals. The tube was just to hold bullets and it was actually a single shot. I don't know whether to believe this or not.
