sounds like you were just practicing as if you were about to unload for when you fixed your non functional horn, you wouldn't be rusty at the dock.

Be thankful they checked you and told you what you didn’t have. You basically got a warning.

Not many people do it, and I've never heard of anyone getting busted for it, but you're supposed to use your horn to signal for things such as passing.

Guess they know you're not going to do it if your horn doesn't work.

An air horn or whistle is probably a good aid to have in case you break down too.

And I always take my throw cushion and hang it on the back of the console seat. It is one of those things that makes sense to have handy. Certainly in cold weather.

A horn is a whistle. Read through the COLREGS and call me when you find the word "horn." I'll hang up and listen.

While your statement is somewhat true (horn is mentioned just not as a vessel signaling device) you do have the option of installing a gong, bell and whistle on your center console along with day shapes, lights, and flags.

The USCG tried to make it simple for the average Joe and let them just have a horn and people still bitch about it.

j/k, I've actually been stopped by Coast Guard at the GM public launch twice. Once bringing a bay boat in, once launching a kayak. Neither one resulted in infractions.

It sounds like its a "fix it ticket" where you prove you fixed it within a certain period of time and you owe nothing.

Checked last year. Passed the inspection. Got a sticker for the side of the boat to allow me to glide through any other USCG inspections.

Wait how can they get you when you had not launched the boat??
Can they just run around and inspect boats at people’s houses too?

They prefer that you call once a month and let them know your weekend plans coming up. Easier to meet you, but house calls are fine too.

So according to that checklist, you don't need a horn, whistle or bell if you are in a boat less than 16 feet.

Been boarded on Chesapeake Bay four times. Usually four guys and one has automatic looking weapon. Once their boat scratched mine as they will tie up to yours even if it's rough seas. Another time happened to sit at bar the night after being boarded and the guy who wrote me a citation for expired fire extinguisher was sitting next to me. They all look very early twenties
