Winchester 5.56 is, or was, one of the most abundant brands of 5.56 in the country.

Lake City is not only the largest supplier for the US Government and Military, but is the largest small arms ammunition factory in the world.

Winchester has three facilities for making ammo, but as far as I can tell only makes 5.56 at Lake City.

This all means that as Lake City cancels contracts, you’ll stop seeing Winchester 5.56 on the shelf at your local gun store.

i guess we can thank Ukraine and Israel

It's another play by the gov to create a shortage and cause a peice hike.

There will be panic buying as word gets out about this (it actually started this past Thursday).

Primers will, no doubt, become unobtanium again here real soon.

Small rifle primers are still readily available, and that’s the leading indicator of an actual shortage. Most likely Olin was just told to stockpile a large amount for the big guy and has a contract to not sell commercial until they’ve hit that.

Fortunately the components are not in short supply and since the last shortage we've seen a lot of new players in the space to compensate. As an example, Palmetto State Armory's new ammo company, AAC, is cranking out a ton of volume.

Apparently Uncle Sam is out of ammo and they probably want to give a ton or Israel now, plus Ukraine still gets theirs.

Sure would be nice to have those 500M rounds they left in the afghan desert right about now...

I think this has more to do with having M855 being phased out. XM855 that was sold commercially was always contract overrun or from a lot that didn't meet DoD specs. M855A1 is a different animal and as far as I know has not been approved for commercial availability. When I put in the order for our range ammo, there is no option for M855, only M855A1.

I have a shite ton of M855. Bought 10K rounds after SH for a song. Still have about 4K rounds. I was just thinking about unloading half of it. I’ll hang on to it.

Yeah, I stocked up a few years ago and also bought SS109 bullets to roll my own as well. Have a stack of little green Federal XM855 boxes about 2 feet tall and deep I have some M855A1 too but it's not something you'd want to do volume shooting with like the legacy stuff.

Just much more wear and tear than the old stuff. Higher operating pressure, much higher bolt thrust and engraving forces, can really chew up feed ramps if you don't check your mags. None of this matters to the military, trade off of better terminal performance, less EPA fines for more rifle maintenance. For those that don't get tax-payer funded weapons it might matter more.

I thought pressure was roughly the same now as M855? It was about 10k PSI higher in 2013.
And the feed ramp issue was solved with Gen 3 Pmags and the EPM.

What brands are you guys using for just range ammo to buy in bulk? Has anyone used the Palmetto stuff? I have in 9mm but not 556.

I've been using Winchester M193 for everything. Buy whatever is cheapest for range fun.
Walmart used to sell 100 rounds of Federal brass .223 for $30 until the stupid El Paso shooting.

If you boys didn’t stock up over the last 2 years, shame on you. I struggled to find 30-06 and 270 rounds in 2020 for deer season.

I made sure that never happened again and I loaded up in 2021 and 2022. I loaded up for all of my guns.

Try Norma Ammo. Good ammo at a good price.

I’ve stocked up on ammo for every caliber I own except .308 and ,357 otherwise I have enough to start my own militia

Ahem (the 3 letter government agencies) I meant I did have enough but not anymore just enough for this hunting season and hopefully next years

No, it still operates at the limit of SAAMI max spec. Plus being all copper with steel tip, the engraving force on the rifling is much higher so barrel life will be affected.

Better, not solved. Got M4A1's here with definite markings on the feed ramps and we got a ton of brand new EPM's for them. As in everything mechanical there is a tolerance range. I also know for a fact M855A1 does not tolerate 1:9 twist in 16" barrels. 20" 1:9 twist it's great in though.
