Older model, has plastic tank. Do I run it empty of gas? Add a stabilizer? Going to change oil for sure. Anything I need to do with carburetor?

Empty the tank and then run it dry.

When you’re ready to turn it off, close gas supply valve and allow it to run out of gas while running. Then you can drain the carburetor bowl and that should prevent any carb issues. Add stabilizer to fuel tank if you plan to leave gas in the tank.

Run Sea Foam thru it before you drain it and put it away.

Absolutely the correct answer.

Depends if it had ethanol. I would sure run some non ethanol or seafoam through it if you run it dry if using Ethanol.

I use ethanol free gas and run them periodically as to not let them sit up too long.

I test mine monthly so I just fill her up, throw in some stabil and put in trash oil. I have a reusable air filter so I clean it too. I keep a couple of spark plugs handy, the manual says clean and gap them every 100 hours, completely overkill. I would clean it if something was amiss and I was trying to rule things out.

I have been running ethanol gas in mine because that’s what’s available but I have a gallon of non ethanol set aside for when we get power back. Im going to drain what’s in it, run the non ethanol gas in it and then drain again.

Miracle fluid for carbs, especially on 2 strokes. I always add it to gas when I buy it, but when running an engine dry I add extra straight into the fuel tank.

You basically have to run ethanol in a crisis of any length because that’s all you can get in sufficient quantities. When I finish with I put a double does of stabilizer in the tank and run it a bit. I then empty the tank and run it out of fuel. I have had my generator since Katrina and run it twice a year using this process. It has never failed to start with a max of two pulls.

My generac 6500 has a metal tank. It has rust in it so I am planning on ordering a new tank and a new carb for next time… this year I replaced the carb and fuel lines and filter for 20-30$ off Amazon. It was so much easier to replace than trying to clean and reinstall.

Run the tank empty and store it with 1/4 bottle of seafoam

I run the generator until the tank gets below a 1/4 tank and then pour an entire bottle of seafoam in the tank and then run it dry. It has 1100 hours and other than changing out plugs changing the oil and cleaning the sediment cup I haven’t had to do any major maintenance.
