Why do these Johnny Six Pack's love being called "captain" so much? Ships have captains; fishing boats just have some dude driving it.
It is ridiculously easy to obtain...part of the process involves a log of boat operating time LOL....and boat, under any kind of condition, and the only data to support the log is the data that the applicant puts in the log...there is no required supporting documentation.

Idiots are everywhere, but, if you hold a credential from the USCG and you don't render aid, not only did you not do the right thing, you're breaking the law. I have pulled a decent number of people out of the water, most got there by doing something incredibly stupid, but that doesn't really matter.
This applies to private recreational operators as well. You don't have to have any credential, if you are able to help and don't you have broken the law.

Jon boats 30 miles out, sure, no safety gear or maintenance,
The guy I used to fish with would haul arse anytime we were off shore and see some moron pull up in a boat that wasn't meant to be off the lake. He'd say "reel 'em in, I'm not letting this pocket fisherman end my trip." He had a point, I watched him drop $2-3K per trip.

This is true, but a private individual is highly unlikely to suffer any consequences. If you hold a credential, the investigator is likely going to charge you.

Hence the disdain for anyone else accepting the word "captain", while some have "truly earned it".
Most of us are "captains" at something in life. Those titles are thrown around loosely also. Like the title "Dad".
No need to carry a chip on your shoulder for the rest of us who just occasionally
drive a boat.

I met him earlier this year as well. The boat sinking makes perfect since now.
