We are huting mornings about an hour from home.

With this heat should I gut out there or haul to house where im setup to clean?

This is my first year hunting this early and it's been hot.

Yes, absolutely. Gut it right where you find it.

I would buy a breakdown gambrel and pulley and plan on doing it there. You can get one for 20$ or so at academy or Walmart.
You figure that best case scenario from the time it dies to loading it in the truck is 30mins then 1hr drive then another 30mins to get it on ice once it’s home.
I bone all my meat while it’s hanging an can fit a whole deer in a 60qt ice chest.

Gutting it will take 5 minutes.
Gut it, stop at the jiffy and put a bag of ice in its chest cavity for the drive home. You’ll be A OK!

I clean them on the spot. Have a ice chest at my truck. A couple weeks ago I did this with a hog and the meat was fine even though it took me two hours to get to the ice chest

Sounds good. I do have a truck hitch deer hanger I can use but it's a pain with my four wheeler hitch in the back alredy..already...

Gutting and ice in the cavity is a great idea.

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve become lazier and don’t want to drag them, or if it’s because I’ve become smarter, but I now clean most of my deer where they fall unless I can drive my truck close. Debone in the field and walk out with my meat in trash bags. Saves a ton of time in the long run.

Friend of mine who is a vet showed me how to clean one without opening the cavity.

Cut out the backstraps
Cut out the shoulders and then hams
Go in through the side by the back legs and get the tenderloins.

I don't disagree.

The other kids at home want to participate and I want them to learn.

I can only bring one at a time so I rotate.

They like to see the deer, etc

One day I think that would end up being easier. Especially when they are older and big enough to help out there.

It’s crazy to me how many of y’all clean deer where they fall. I’ve hunted deep deep in public land my whole life and I’ve only ever gutted 1 deer in the woods and that’s because we killed 3 that morning and they all had to go in the same deer cart. Gutting them was easier than making 2 trips. I’m not knocking it at all, just never done it. I quit hunting Sicily island because I figured my only option to get a deer out of there would be to clean it and pack the meat out and I wasn’t doing all that lol

I originally did it when I didn't feel like dragging but last year I did it for every deer I killed. It takes a little longer to cleanthan hanging but by the time I drag it, hang it, dump guts, clean sxs, and spray off the patio it's a wash.

I always have field dressed them where they fall. I'm just of the mindset that the sooner you can get the blood and guts out, the quicker you dissipate the heat. Heat promotes bacteria growth.

Yep. Most of the time the job is done in the amount of time it would have taken to walk back to the truck and get a 4 wheeler and return to the deer. I like bringing deer home for the kids to take pictures with and help skin, but if it's just me I'll knock it out on the spot most times.

I've been fortunate and have always had an easy drag, skinning rack, and gut pile available except for a couple hunts out of state. That being said, a cheap 8x8 blue tarp makes a huge difference cleaning one in the field. Keeps the dirt and grass off. Keep a few antimicrobial bags in your pack and roll with it.

Gut and it will be fine. For warm weather (they call this 80F) the meat should be safe for 12 hours. This is FRESH meat, completely different than dealing with a cut of meat. Bacteria live on surfaces of things, inside a body immune systems keep things sterile. They don't keep things sterile in the digestive track, they need the bacteria to help digest food so that is why it starts rotting faster, it already has bacteria.

I wouldn't go 12 hours, even if it is safe you start degrading quality. But if it is a 1-2 hours I doubt you notice a difference using either method. Coming home with just meat vs a carcass sure does sound appealing though.

My rule, since I live a hour away, is to gut it, take the hide off, and put a bag of ice in it.

for me, its by far the best and most efficient way to clean deer

I've done everything, drug them out, deer cart, put on shoulders, etc and quartering and hauling out in my backpack is by far my preferred method now, especially since I'm hunting 1-2 miles away from the truck most of the time

I'll gut mine in the woods. Just a habit I learned as a kid. Then I'll either take it to the house and process it myself after letting it sit in a fridge a week or so or I'll just go straight to the processor and drop it off in the hide and let them handle it. More the latter as I get older.
