Looking at buying F-350 dually 4x4 work truck for occasional use (maybe one 500-700 mile round trip once every six months). This truck would be pulling a 12,000 - 13,000 lb. work boat on these trips.

I know the diesel will perform better, get better mileage and last for more miles than the gasoline engine. But given the limited use (maybe 1500 miles per year), I'm not sure the diesel engine is worth the extra $7500

Thoughts ??

I would think if/when you decide to part with it a gas burner vs. a diesel could be a negative to the next owner....

I have the 6.2 in my F150 and its a blast. Its loud and fast. I know several people with the 6.2 in their F250s and they still enjoy it but are thinking twice about the 6.7 in the future. I dont know how I would feel about the 6.2 and F350.

All this said, the 6.2 creates more hp and tq than every single diesel did 15 years ago and does it more more efficiently. If you are opposed to diesel, the 6.2 will do just fine.

I would recommend a tune though. They detune and put a lot of restrictions on these motors and leave a lot on the table.

Because the 6.7s blow everything else out of the water.

Been down that road once before w/ F-350 ---- don't want to inherit problems caused by somebody's poor maintence.

For that little mileage I switch my vote to 100% the 6.2. You will never come close to seeing the payoff of the 6.7. I have not towed the weight that you are talking about but mine sits in a 150 and the dually will handle 100% differently.

It won't. I love diesels, but in this case I would get gas.

Diesel.

For only a mild load 1500 miles a year? How long do you think it'll take to break even? $7500 will get you over 18k miles in gasoline, or 12 years of free gasoline compared to the base cost of a diesel. That is at $4 a gallon and 10mpg, first is high and the second is low.

Sammich:

Good info.

I'm not necessarily opposed to diesel ...... I'm just oppsed to forking out an extra $7500 unless there's a significant benefit.

What about maintence, fuel additives, etc. on the new diesels ??

You may want to look in to the towing capacity on the gasser since you intend to haul that heavy, especially doing so 500+ miles at a time. I believe the 6.2 gasser in a dually is only rated for 12,500lb towing capacity while the deisel is something like 20,000lb capacity. Also consider that perhaps 10 years from now the diesel will be worth quite a bit more than any gas engine, especially considering it'll have extremely low milage.

I've found that the maintance and additives cost is usually exagerated by those that don't even own a diesel or are relatively new to them. An oil change for my 6.7 is comparable to the cost for an oil change in my previous 7.3. The fuel additive(DEF) is ~$17 for a 2.5 gallon jug, I'll usually add one jug roughly every 5000 miles or so.

ETA: I do my own maintance. Currently in my truck is the required oil(13qt), oil filter, and fuel filters(2 of them) for a grand total of ~$150. Also keep in mind that the maintance schedules, per Ford, are recommended every 10,000 miles for an oil change(I do it every 5,000 just to be safe). Whereas my 7.3 and any gasser will require an oil change every 3,000 miles.

Lets not get too far ahead of ourselves, while the 6.7 is obviously a beast, its still too new to compare to the 7.3 and the cummins 5.9s.

To the OP:

I'd go with the diesel.

15,000#s for the 6.2 and bumper pull, 15,600#s for 5th wheel.

Diesel is more expensive than gasoline.
I pay $25 for an oil change, my dad pays $100 (6.7 Cummins)
I dont know how much DEF cost, diesel drivers do.

I am impressed- Ice Cream Sammich has just posted- finally- a decent, sound bit of automotive advice on Tiger Droppings- that has to be a first. Good on you my man, good on you!

I'm fact, the above posts may be the most reasonable, sound advice posted on TD ever.

The diesel will pull better than the gasoline. The diesel costs more to operate as well. The gas will save you money, but I think I would focus on a transmission cooler if you are going to go with the gas.

Not necessarily to you, cat.

This is from Wikipedi on the 7.3 turbo diesel that began the diesel rage.

quote:

This engine produced up to 250 hp (190 kW) and 505 lb·ft (685 N·m) of torque in automatic-transmission trucks during the last years of production, and 275 hp (205 kW) and 520 lb·ft (705 N·m) of torque in manual-transmission trucks.

The 6.2 makes 410hp and 420tq. So a little less tq but more efficient.
