Examples of our "throw away" culture.

Last month my wife was walking one of our dogs in the neighborhood and walked by a home that's for sale. Next to the trash cans by the road was a Dyson vacuum cleaner. She stops and takes a look at it and it's in good shape. No noticeable damage and not beat up, so she wheels it the couple blocks back to our house.
I don't know anything about vaccums, but I tell her I'll check it out. I plug it in and it runs and the roller brushes work, but no suction at all. So I take off the cyclone/collection bin and seperated them. I hosed out the cyclone since it's just plastic and no moving parts and globs of pet hair and carpet fibers started falling out. I had to rinse it several times and used a coat hanger wire to remove it all, but it works like a charm now. Washed the filter and tried it in the house. This thing gets up pet hair and dust like you wouldn't believe, so we're using it instead of our old one.
Dyson DC17 Animal-$550 vacuum when new.
Then yesterday she went to drop off some of her clothes to donate to Goodwill. Well she's looking around and sees another Dyson vacuum. A DC18 Slim. It has an "As Is" sticker and price tag of $20. She calls me about it and I tell her to go ahead and buy it, might be something simple to fix. I plugged it in at home and it runs, good suction but the roller brushes won't turn. I look on the top of the head and there's a reset button for the motor. Pressed the reset button and it started working.
Cleaned it up and it works perfectly. Dyson DC18 Slim-$450 when new, $250 referbished online.
It's amazing that people won't even spend 5 or 10 minutes checking to see if they can repair something and just throw it away.

Which one you want to part with?

Ridiculous, isn't it? But hey, one man's trash is a smart and industrious man's treasure. Good finds.

That's awesome! Put $2 in your wife's purse and on her next outing tell her to pick up a powerball ticket
In college, the neighbor chick graduated college and was moving out/selling the condo. She threw away her gas grill propane tank and all.
I helped her wheel it to the curb (it was in bad shape) and took the tank home.

My dad and I had a similar discussion not long ago, few people have the motivation to attempt to repair anything these days, plumbing, electrical, automotive, etc etc. What makes that an absolute shame is that there's more knowledge at your fingertips now than ever before, Youtube has an instructional video for everything, yet it seems more people are just inclined to just pay someone to do it, or simply throw it away. Seems less and less people have a drive to get their hands dirty because doing so is below them.
We didn't have shite growing up, so if something broke I had to help my dad repair it, run plumbing, do electrical work. If we failed, which wasn't often, then he'd reluctantly call in someone to fix it. I hated it back then but realize now how valuable learning those few things were in the long run and thanked him for that a few weeks ago. It wasn't until just recently that I started to realize how clueless people can be when it comes to the simplest of manual labor task.

My neighbor through out a nice little air compressor. I picked it up and plugged it in. Worked but it wasn't building pressure. Ended being a stuck check valve where the out feed hose from the co.pressor goes into the tank. I sprayed a little oil on it and it's working fine.

in college, the university ppl were throwing out a $600ish color laser printer because the power cord had frayed/burnt up. The cord was one of the detachable kind that plugs on both ends. $10 later got a new cord from radio shack and I had a new printer.
had the same things happen on a friend's Costas ($30 mail-in repair for new earpiece); Shimano Citica (needed oil)

I recently gave away my Dyson DC17 Animal. Loved it but it was super heavy and I have a two-story house. I was tired of destroying my sheetrock and molding while hauling it up and down the stairs.
I wouldn't call donating to Goodwill throwing away.

my neighbor was throwing away a dewalt radio with built in battery charger. My son asked if I could go get it so he could bash it up with a hammer (I let him occasionally break up old things with a hammer). I said lets take it apart first and see if we can fix it. There was a burnt glass fuse on the circuit board. I swapped it out and brought it back to him. A case of beer was at my door step the next night when I got back from work.

It was last Thursday evening if I remember right...My neighbor had this big blue canister on wheels with a lid on it. He rolled it all the way to the end of his driveway. It was full of stuff, I kid you not completely full!
The next morning a huge truck came and hauled it all away!! All of that stuff in the canister just discarded like it was worthless trash!!!!!

My buddy down the street was throwing out a bag full of craftsman cordless tools - drill, hammer drill, circular saw, jig saw, reciprocal saw, a few other things. I asked why. He says "it needs new batteries. They won't charge." So I took the whole bag.
Now I have a duffel bag full of used power tools that need a new battery. This was a year ago.

My fellow dumpster divers/trash day pickers.
Found two 6' wooden ladders in the office dumpster. Good job on the Dyson's.
