So back to the actual question that was asked....

20 opening morning
2 Sunday morning

All teal, mixed bad of green & blue wing. Saw some big ducks but very few if any tried to work in. SW rice field.

It makes sense for a later start to the season. Snow and ice. That moves birds south. There’s more of both later in the year.

the reasoning behind the traditional earlier dates in coastal areas is due to the majority of birds being killed are early migrators

I prefer an early opener because our lease on coast stays mostly dry during the second split. But typically when the river is high we struggle along the coast. There's just too much available habitat up north right now for them to leave.

all the rivers are high and they have lots of places to go which is unusual for this early in the year

was in Shreveport last week and couldn't believe water all over the place

Said it in a thread a few days ago... Coast hunters can expect to struggle all year.

There is an abundance of water in northern Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri and iowa. Going to need a big long freeze to push birds down even to Arkansas and Northern La.

Anyone who doesn't see this is blind, deaf, stupid, or all 3. Our coastal zone opens earlier than all of Arkansas and parts of Missouri which is insane!

I hunt in Maringouin (East Zone), and we've been saying for years that the season should be pushed back 2-4 weeks. In February, when we go out to pick everything up for the year, the lease is usually chock full of birds. Of course, they're not being hunted so they get more comfortable, but as warm as December has been the past few years and as cold as February has been, it seems like a no brainer.

federal framework will never allow feb duck hunting except for the youth day and that was a struggle

Feds say the season has to end 1/31. Not the state.

Back up 60 from there and you are early Dec.

by putting in the split, you back up another couple of weeks to encompass a weekend.

That puts you at mid Nov.

IMO, having an open duck season for the weekends wrapping Thanksgiving is important for hunter recruitment.

When you look at the national picture, we need all the new hunters we can get, even if that means the face painted boys in flatbills.

The smaller our numbers get, the more easily our privileges and rights can be voted away.

What is the reasoning for the fed's position on February duck hunting? Farming?

This is one of the best posts in this thread so far IMO.

With this much water up north it's going to be hard to get the birds here no matter what the weather is doing, look at the front last week, snow and ice over the plains and not many new birds. shite happens mother nature isn't always kind.

I will agree it's rare for Venice to not have birds but it has happened before, I want to say the 93 or 94 season was similar but I have to check my records at the camp. It's an anomaly but it does happen, I will also say the hunting isn't what it was down there but still better than most except for this year.

Forked Island - 5 man limit Saturday, 3 man limit Sunday. Tons of ring necks. Most of the teal seem to have left. Saw a couple mallards but no other big ducks.

Friends in Whiteville (Avoyelles Parish) got 5 man limit of teal Saturday (their opening day), 5 total ducks Sunday.

ETA: Hunted at a club near Bell City on Wednesday (coldest morning yet) and it wasn't good. My blind was two short of a limit but most of the other blinds had 2-5 birds total. Think 1 of the 9 blinds limited out but none of them saw many birds.

We did okay on Thursday. 10 ducks, 4 mallards, 2 mottled, 1 grey and 3 buffleheads. Really weird for the public marsh I hunt.

Saturday was a good shoot. 24 ducks and about 90% bluewings

Sunday the bluewings completely left. All but one. 2 ducks. Mallard and bluewing

If it was up to me it would open thanksgiving week - so 9 days Sat through the following Sunday , then close back down, then go for 51 straight days and close 1/31 no matter what day of the week that fell on

hard for the dead ones to raise the babies, and the babies are the only ones dumb enough to kill
