Today was the first day that we didn't do well..at all..at least by the lease I hunt on standards..

7 greys and 2 teal between 4 hunters.

No wind, blue bird day, warm temps..

no a conducive day for slaying ducks..oh well..always tomorrow...

I would love to know your response to the following, "Coastal hunters who didn't suffer from what amounted to a very late season tropical storm had plenty of the usual early migrants to shoot at." Next, what is your response to the following? "late January in the marsh means most all feed is gone and the tides are typically so low, most tidal leases are marginal at best."

In late January through early March when I see big bunches of ducks, I see them in the middle of big lakes/ ponds that have feed and they are virtually unhuntable. At the same time, if those big places have nothing to live on, you see virtually no ducks near the coast and, when that happens, no one is shooting anything consistently. Thus, I have no idea where those ducks go and I'd love to know who gets them...

Most of them are still stuck under the nets. By late January the determined ones have found a way out though.

I do. I hunt Venice later in season when all the feed on our lease in the marsh is gone. Then I start hunting them in the timber.

They go to the rice fields baw.

Which also happens to be in the coastal zone. I am a coastal zone rice field hunter and I can tell you all the rice field guys are upset about the season moving up. The end of January we are stacked up with ducks. Then we have to watch them land in our spread during goose season. We have been doing horrible scraping up a few teal and greys here and there.

I can tell you that in Southeast Arkansas we often hammer ducks on strong south winds especially when it happens in January. We also will be absolutely covered in pintail and gadwalls some of these times along with the mallards and I've always speculated we are getting birds moving back up off the coast. I think there were even some pintails that were fitted with radio transmitters that confirmed this as they were noted roosting in the marsh and flying up to NE LA and SE AR to feed.

Dunno if it's just hunters making them do this, but we get hundreds of mallards and thousands of pintails the last week of every season. Which means they'll likely show up after season closes this year. Sweet.
