Nice spoonbills...

I was being facetious about where do ducks go. I do great in flooded timber potholes the size of my house in late january

Been a longtime since I posted on the OB. Just spent four days in Great Bend Kansas, hunting Cheyenne Bottoms. First time I'd been there so I didn't know what to expect.

Lots of ducks/geese on the refuge. We ended up with 48 ducks and 4 snow geese. The marsh emptied out on Saturday because it was the start of Kansas' Pheasant season. Things slowed down that morning because there wasn't adequate pressure to keep the ducks moving.

Checked in with my friends in Stuttgart and the prospects aren't great for their opening day this weekend. Not enough water and ducks in the area.

Some guides are determining if they need to cancel their weekend hunters or not. This weekend's cold front should push but the lack of water won't hold them in the area.

Just had a report from the Jones area that the front pushed in a massive load of new birds. Sure hope it's true and they stick around.

10-4 My family and farm are in Clarendon. My uncle owns the liquor store there and makes calls, J.S. initials.

My wife use to teach elementary school in Clarendon back in the mid to late 90s. I've seen your uncle's calls before.

I'm also familiar with Taylor Made and Duckall out of Clarendon. I own a couple Ricn N Tone's but I hunt with a Gaston Custom Call and it was modeled after Alvin Taylor's call.

From time to time I look for Taylor Made calls for sell. Want one for my small collection, but they certainly aren't cheap.

Been looking at Boyd Custom Calls too. He's a guy that grew up in Clarendon and he lived next to me and we worked together in Stuttgart.

Mr Alvin taught my uncle how to make calls. When he died, my uncle got all of his equipment and jigs. Trademark "coke bottle" look.

Yes the original Taylors are extremely rare. I think he has a few put away for safe keeping.

ETA: He is the mayor of Clarendon now also

Ill be up there on the weekend of Dec 5. Cant get any worse than it has been over the past few years, hopefully we get some action. Im about to put the ducks on the backburner and start targeting geese with the way things have been.

Haven't been back on the Grand Prairie since I moved. Now, I hunt in Missouri and Kansas. Might get back down there towards the end of this season.

Cheyenne Bottoms

Bring a Go-Devil or surface motor. It's all shallow mash, comes up around the bottom of your calf. There was a group from Baton Rouge there when we checked into the hotel.

Water level fell out of Pool #2 while we were there and we couldn't get to where we needed to be that last morning.

We'll be headed back there this time next year for a duck/goose/pheasant hunt.

Not looking good for me... I spent all morning scouting some timber spots and due to all the rain the 4 wheeler trails are all under deep water.. Trying to come up with a plan B, sucks...

Dang, being from Clarendon, Arkansas, it must be nice to reside in the duck mecca that is NWLA.
