which would you recommend, a German Shorthaired Pointer or a Lab?

You wanna be different or go with an animal that has with stood the test of time?

Unless you plan on doing several different things, lab easily. They're pretty much born to retrieve ducks

A friend of mine has a GSP and I have a lab. When there is ice on the edge of the pond, my dog jumps in the water and swims, while we're setting the decoys. His dog shuts down. The GSP does fine in mild weather. But it doesn't have the coat to handle the cold.

Oh boy. Paging BigHoss
ETA GSP's have too much energy to sit there and watch us hunt. Those things specialize is covering lots of ground, not sitting still, waiting on a single retrieve

My GSP chased down anything that moves and will hunt anything. However, he doesn't like to retrieve dead birds, but will. Now if we wing one, he's the dog you want.
He really dislikes being quiet and still in a duck blind. GSPs are great dogs, but my next dog will be a lab again.

In my experience people get pointers and spaniels to duck hunt with the hopes that they'll do what a lab can do. Might as well just get the lab

Lab. GSPs are great dogs, but for strictly a duck dog a lab is the better choice between those two.

+1 if you know how to be a "firm" owner

-2 regardless of what kind of owner you want to be. Get a lab and be yourself.

GSP, they are by far the smartest dogs ever bred.

I like Golden retrievers. They seem a little slower and methodical than a full blown over drive lab.
