I once went from BR to Shreveport with my dog in the back. But she was in a box with a cover. Now I'm older and softer and the dogs ride in the back seat.

This! I once rode up to Arkansas for a duck hunt with a group of friends. 2nd truck had mechanical issues before we took off so myself and another guy volunteered to ride in the back of the working truck.....with the dog. About 4-5 hrs into the ride, we fell asleep in sleeping bags. When we woke up, the dog was sleeping in between us.

Y'all can have this new society.

Our dogs always rode in the back with their feet up on the side rails and their heads beside the cab. They loved it.

No real long trips though.

I see plenty of farmers with Blue Heelers riding on the back of flat beds. I'd be kind of nervous doing that.

I had a lab who rode in the bed of the truck from Galveston to Atlanta. She would occasionally come through the sliding back glass if she though she heard a cookie wrapper crinkling but for most of the trip she was in the bed of the truck. We used to do it all the time. I haven't done it in a long time.

Mine rides on the back floorboard. I'd be a mess if she jumped out the back and caused a wreck or something. Plus I like my dog so I don't want her hurt.

If your dogs are smart enough (and not a jack russell) they are find in the back of a truck at least for a little ways.

You couldn't knock my previous lab off the back of a 4wheeler if you tried. He knew just how to balance on the rack and against me. My current lab weighs about twice as much as my last one and is too stupid to understand that if he rides on the 4wheeler he wouldn't get so tired.

My dog is 12 years old and has ridem in the bed all his life. On long rides, he’ll be in kennel. On short rides around town, he can roam. I’m sure I get judged but I’ve never had a problem.

Everybody keeps bringing up whether the dog will stay in the bed or jump out. Main point is what happens when you get in a wreck. That's the whole reason for keeping the dog in the kennel and tying down the kennel. It's safer than being in the cab for them. Yeah I am part of the new generation of woossies. Love my dogs like they are my family and my job is to make sure they are safe.

My old dog rode in the front passenger seat like she owned it. If someone else was in the truck, that was fine, but there was going to be a blue heeler in their lap.

I get irrationally mad when I see a dead dog on the road that obviously fell out of a truck bed. Driving around at the farm I’d put my dogs in the truck bed, but they’d always jump out and run with the truck like I was driving a giant four wheeler.

My two labs ride free in the back of my truck. The hard part is getting their fat arse in the bed of my truck. One is 13 the other 11 and can't jump in or out like they used to do so I have to pick em up to get in and out. Sometimes I leave the tailgate down riding around town and people honk at me like I didn't remember to put the tailgate up. I've found out that when they are young, drive slowly down a soft dirt road, they will eventually jump out and when they do, it's the last time they try it. Never have had one jump again. They absolutely love riding back there and I would ride with them if I didn't have to drive.

Never ride loose in bed. Even the most well trained dog will bolt under the right (wrong) situation. I know too many people who lost valuable and loving dogs who fell or jumped from an open truck bed. I've gone as long as 12 hrs with 2-3 water, bathroom breaks in a well secured properly air vented metal dog box, depending on conditions. Box also serves as weatherproof container for lots of equipment, food, guns etc. leaving lot of cab space for luggage and human passengers. Some times they'll ride in a portable plastic crate either in the bed or cab.

What are the clues that a dead dog obviously fell out of a truck bed?

Had a feist that had a choice, in the cab or in the back thru the sliding back glass. Most times he preferred the back riding on the toolbox, head sticking out both sides. Had to put carpet on the top to give him traction after he got ejected in turns a couple times. Tried to keep him the cab but he’d whine and never sit still.
