Dogs and Chocolate

So, I've heard that Wive's Tale all my life as I'm sure you have: Chocolate is poisonous to dogs.
I'm not sure I believed it. But who cares? Who gives chocolate to a dog anyhow???
So my mother has (had) a Standard Poodle. Last night the neighbor was loading her car with a bunch of stuff to take to a dinner party or whatever. Set out a chocolate cake with all her stuff. Loaded the car. Forgot about the chocolate cake and drove off.
Mom's big old dumbass poodle rolls over there and eats the entire chocolate cake. An hour later, she's dead. (The poodle, not my mother).
Anyhow, maybe there is something to this dog chocolate thing?

It takes a lot of chocolate to kill a big dog. A chocolate cake would probably do it though, especially if it's dark chocolate

Real dark chocolate is very dangerous for dogs.
The fake junk in most candies isn't and they have very little real chocolate in it.
I'd bet there was some good, real bakers chocolate in that cake.
I've seen a yorkie eat a half of a chocolate pie and just get sick. Because it had fake jello pudding chocolate in it.
I routinely give my Catahoula a peanut butter M&M because its his favorite treat.

I had a Dane eat an entire cake to where the dish looked like it came out of the dishwasher.

M&Ms make my terrier sick. We can't leave a bag anywhere she could possibly get to them because she loves them and will go to extraordinary feats to get to them; just to get sick from them.

In college my roommate had a black lab. We had a gallon ziplock bag full to the brim with brownies (no weed) that was zipped up and left on the kitchen counter overnight. The lab was able to get the brownies off the counter and ate the entire bag. He was just fine and is still thriving today. Hunted with him this past weekend.

Growing up, my uncle had a German shepherd and I some small rat terrier type dog. He would give the dogs Hershey's kisses (or as we called them silver bells) to the dogs as treats. Both dogs lived a long life.

as mentioned earlier - dark chocolate is teh problem. had a spring eat a pound of chocolate candies ... other than the runs he was fine

One of my nephews rescued a puppy when he left N.O. after the flood when Katrina hit. Even named the dog Katrina.
When he was living with us across the lake in Hammond while we were fixing up the houses, the dog got into a big bowl of chocolate candy and like your dog, had the shits so bad it puddled up the house in about 10 spots.
Came home to that stench and mess to clean up, but the dog survived just fine.

Yeah. Truth is she had a little dog and a big dog (the Standard). And the big dog was getting up there in age. And having some health problems. Which clearly contributed to her tapping out on the chocolate cake.
Mom is 80, and her household will be much easier to manage with just a small lap dog. So it all kind of worked out....

I've got a sister-in-law who just turned 71 and she now has 12 cats and 2 dogs in her house, down from 13 cats and 7 dogs just 3 years ago.
All she does is take care of the animals as it is practically a full-time job between feeding, bathing, washing bedding, cleaning house and litter boxes, etc.
Then add in the cost of pet food and vet care, and it's insane how much those animals are costing her every month.
Oh, and they're all house pets.

Our boxer got ahold of an entire bag of hershey's kisses while we were at work one day. We were worried it would make him sick, but the only adverse effects were the foil wrapper pieces in his shite.

Not dog related but when I was growing up, my moms siamese cat got into some chocolate at Christmas. This damn cat starts shitting all over and running thru the house. It ran straight into my bedroom and climbed the heavy wool curtains shitting the whole time. My bedroom smelled like cat shite for weeks
