So we have a private piece of family land, pretty much hunted it all of our lives. We have a ton of does on the land, I see 11-15-17 at one time all eating under me year over year. We do kill a few bucks, killed 2 8pts two years in a row, but I'm perplexed. We never see bucks until late Dec not even on camera. Is there a way to make more show up-certain feeds to put out, etc or should I stop being worried and just go with it.

How much land are you working with?
Posted on 9/22/17 at 8:43 am to Phattie Jet
im sure they are around but dont come out in the open as much or even during daylight hours. Got to go find the thick shite where they stay.
This is how my place is in franklinton.

It sounds like you need some doe control.

A big issue with lots of does is that it is self fulfilling. There is a biological twist in the model that they are just now figuring out: When a buck fawn is born he hangs around his mother for about a year. But when his dick gets hard his second year, if his mother is still alive, he will bounce to a new territory. It's a biological behaviour that prevents inbreeding. On average, he will move something like 3-5 miles.
But if his mother gets killed during his first year, he will stay where he was born.
So, if you aren't killing does, you are producing lots of bucks for your neighbors. Kill your mature does and your buck population will spike dramatically.
Truth.

quote:This is why our biologist told us to kill does with yearlings. We had members that would not do it, so we never came close to filling the tags we were given. Our rules were not flexible enough to allow the heartless doe killers to make up for the bleeding hearts, so the problem just got worse. It made the guy angry

Get to blastin!

Word has gotten out that all those does are lesbian does. Bucks ain't got time to mess with that.

SO yes, we do blast them does-we also work with others to come in and fill there tags by shooting our does. (Sorry boys, we full this year before you ask) I was just more curious on this. We do hunt the thick stuff as well. I'm not greedy, I shoot 4 or 5 deer a year and fill the freezer, its a great piece of land., I was just curious. Its around 500 acres, surrounded by sugar cane fields, only my dad and I hunt it. Nearest club to hunt by us is several miles away, very little pressure. A couple years back a doe came up to the truck on opening day, I opened the window and just about petted her.

I've read that the proper buck/doe ratio is around 1 buck to 2 or 3 does for the best potential on bucks.
That may not be correct however. Someone here will likely know and either confirm or correct.

You have bucks, you just haven't figured out where they live yet. If you truly have very little pressure and when you truly find the bucks, summer and early fall you'll see them every day. That's why a lot of guys like to hunt their big bucks on camera as early as possible, because they are still in summer feeding mode. Once they start getting horny, they are not nearly as predictable until the full on rut.
If you aren't seeing them until the rut, that's because you aren't very close to them and you aren't seeing them until they are traveling further away looking for does to breed.
ETA: Also don't forget, that bucks will usually run in groups in the summer and early fall before they split up for the rut. So you rarely don't just see one early on, you see a group of 2-5 or whatever. They will run with does some especially younger bucks, but usually separate.

Soak tampons in doe in heat urine and hang them 4 - 5 ft off the ground every so often. I've had bucks come in and lick them 50 yds from my stand.

Now we do start to get a few pics of bucks by themselves on the cams near Christmas, Id say pre rut bc rut hits well in my area right near new years. I just rarely see a single one on the cam until then. I may go deeper looking, but Im content where I am, just curious on your prospective.
