Its getting that time of year around here. I have a new baby, my first, and looking for some advice. We boat lakes(around ATL), Orange Beach, and the Keys.

Any suggestions on smaller life jackets. I see most infant sizes are "Under 30lbs", she will be about 15.5-16.5 by the time we are ready for the water.

No, because I wouldn't take my infant boating on open water.

Try them on her in person but you can probably get a better price online. Let her spend a few minutes in the jacket moving around to make sure it doesn't ride up and push on her throght.

That is your answer. Just don't buy cheap. Sure, they will out grow it fast, but you never know when another will come around.

Do pick your days and do have a place to were you can get the baby out the sun and wind when running. Keep the trips on the short side too!

We went through this last year. About that same age. Plan on short trips. Also plan on taking enough shite for about 10 people. We just used the standard infant life jacket and our baby didn't seem to mind it. We bought a little pop up half tent to use on sand and Robinson island. We also had her one of those floatie rings with a little roof on it. MAKE SURE YOU AIR THAT BABY OUT AFTER THEY GET WET. Diaper rash ain't no joke.

It really is a pain and a whole lot of preparation but hey u still get to go out on the boat which is better than not going on the boat.

My daughter is 10 months, and around 18 lbs. I am considering the infant one from Mustang Survival. I like their adult products. We have a mid sized sailboat, with all the things to trip over as she gets more mobile, I want something good. Safety is number 1, price doesn't really matter.

Not really. Just have to plan and bring everything, even the kitchen sink. Then again, just like running to the store with a baby.

Lakes and inshore boating are "open water"?

We struggled to find the right size jacket for our son a couple of years ago, and he was already a year old. Most of the smaller ones just are not small enough. We ended up using pool/swimming floatie type things. We weren't really boating with him, just needed it around the pool and beach since he was walking and still in the clumsy toddler stage. Check out Target and other places in the pool stuff and you might find something. Also look for one with a strap between the legs that you can adjust, so it won't end up riding up and getting around her neck and face.

The problem is the infants get really hot under the vest, especially at idle...

If I remember, that is the one my daughter used for our grandson.

We have a bimini and were going to get something else for shade. Someone recommended a fan, so that's on order.

its not like they are that much to begin with, so no problem on the cost. I am just looking for one that runs small, since they all rate at "under 30"

I am about to have a little one so I have done research on this topic. The Coast Guard seems to give the go ahead once the child reaches 18lbs.
quote:

Per the US Coast Guard, “The PFDs currently available for newborns up to 18 pounds may not provide a proper fit to perform as expected. Unless the parent is able to test their newborns out in a PFD, sized for infants, in a swimming pool, they will not know if that device will float their child with his/her head out of the water. You must be sure you know the PFD you have works for your infant. Otherwise we recommend the child not be exposed to any risk in a boat on the water.”

Bass Pro and Cabela's have some quality infant life jackets

We have taken a couple of kids but they were over 2 years.

A lot depends on size of the boat. If the boat is not a decent size- I would not take an infant or small child

both of mine got boat rides prior to being 6mths old. In-laws live on the TN river and we would take quick trips in their pontoon boat.

We just knew that they would likely be quick trips.

Also, Congrats NYC...

i've done it with all 3 of mine. all of them were on either my boat or my dad's boat before they could walk. never had any problems but use common sense with their exposure.

My son is 10 months old, and we just picked him up one for this summer seems to fit alright, but he is 29" tall and about 25 lbs as of his last doctors appointment. We are going to try it out in the lake before he ever gets on the boat, but I highly doubt he will spend much time on the boat.
