Heading to Kansas to hunt in two weeks. If I choose to drive it is a 13 hour drive. Has anyone ever had any experience with flying Wild Game home?
I'm sure I could look into getting it mounted at a Taxidermy there and have him ship it back, but then I would still need to figure out a way to get the meat home.
Is my best option just to drive? Anyone been in this before and flown with your meat/trophy
Thanks in advance for the advice.

Quarter the deer, chunk it in an ice chest with ice. Cut the head off, double trash bag it, ice if needed. It's only 13 hours...

I hunt in South Texas a lot, and it's roughly a 10-11 hour drive. I usually just put my in a thick garbage bag, freeze it the day/night before, throw it in an ice chest with the valve open, cover it with ice, and put a new bag or two on depending on the melt. As far as mounting goes, I had a local do it for me for the one I've had mounted and had them ship it to my house.

If you can find the info from Steve Rinella he has discussed this in great detail. Packs it in yeti soft coolers some sort of way and checks them at the airport.

I want to say it was around $200-300, but it was also about 5 years ago. The taxidermy built a crate out of 1x4s, and it was very well padded.

You cannot bring the head full back into Louisiana legally. You could risk it or you could get a local up there to skin the skull for you for about $80. Freeze the cape and throw it on top of ice that's in meat cooler. Then you can get it mounted here and avoid shipping cost. I've done it in Kansas multiple times.

Make sure the brain is cleaned out of the skull, and no spinal column. As Jack said you will be breaking laws in a few states you drive thru.

Throw him on the truck hood, tie both feet to the mirrors, floor it.

But for real, or the CWD laws still in effect when you cross state lines ?

Is this a legality question or a logistics one?

It ain’t a bad drive.

I have heard that people that are very careful and travel in street clothes, ckean all signs of mud, dust and blood off their truck and have a bed cover sometimes just run on in back to La.

But those guys are breaking the law and should be publicly scorned

Just coordinate with a meat processor to process next day. You will likely have to pay a premium, but it’s just part of the cost of an out-of-state hunt. Do the same with a local taxidermist, support the local economy, help prevent cwd spread, and stay legal.

Pretty much this. Just don't be a dumbass and you'll be fine. As far as flying it home, it works but is expensive as hell. Just pack it discreetly and ease on home.

I had a taxidermist cape my buck in Montana and shipped it to my usual guy in Louisiana.

I went to Alaska about 8 years back to fish salmon and halibut. We brought our fillets to a processor to pack and prep for the flight home. They vacuum sealed and froze our fish in three 50# boxes. Two were fish boxes that they provided and the third was a cube ice chest that we flew up there with. The cost was whatever the checked baggage fee was at the time. I am sure you could do something similar through a processor out there. I would call around and check. All they did to the cube ice chest to make it flight ready was ducktape the crap out of it.

ETA: The TSA says you can fly with antlers as carry on or checked luggage TSA Antlers This would have to be just a cleaned skull plate and antlers of course.
