I have had a bunch of knives through the years, but the one I always keep coming back to is the CaseXX Sod Buster.

It has a deep belly to the blade so you don’t accidentally cut skin or guts with the tip and the handle is round enough to grip with bloody hands. It is a time-proven knife thst still sells for about $60.

Cutco folding pocket knife with serrated blade.

Skin deer all year and never have to sharpen.

I have a Cutco with the serrated blade. Great work knife. I finally needed mine sharpened and it had sat on the porch for a while, so the handle looked bad. I mailed it back to them and they sent me a new one. Really good for cleaning an elk.

Ditto that. The only cheap pocket knife I ever lost, I found it years later in a food plot I was disking.

I use multiple knives to skin, including a custom forged by my buddy Craig Beard in SW MS, but my input is to have a gut hook on your main knife, or on another one you can quickly grab.

I usually have a Case Trapper in my pocket that works just fine. But a Kershaw Deschutes with a gut hook for $65 makes it easier.

This, if I’m prioritizing weight I use some fancy steel and a nice knife.

If I’m coming back to a skinning rack and have a steel rod with me, 6” victorious boning knife every time. You can rake it across a brick and have it shaving sharp again with a sharpening steel and 30 seconds.

You don’t want to have to field sharpen any of these hard fancy steels that need a diamond stone.

Dexter Russel beef skinner is what I like to use for skinning. I have the Havalon, and like them, but I prefer a fixed blade.

another vote for Mora, have used one in our camping setup for about 6 years. Scary sharp from the factory, and for the price you don't need to mess with sharpening if you don't want to.

Guy on our deer lease uses a putty knife and sharpens the edge all the way from one side to the other. Since mild steel it dulls quickly but sharpens quickly on a stone. Amazingly fast and maneuverable.

Having a U-shaped knife that is almost razorblade like is not for baws that are on their 6th+ beer skinning a deer... Let's just leave it at that.
