I’ve had 2 vanguard series 2 rifles. 1 chambered in 257 weatherby and the other in 6.5 creed. They were both tack drivers and fine hunting rifles. I preferred the 257 over the 6.5. I would check out the 257 weatherby before buying if you’ve never heard of it.

So I got back into hunting last season and I’m looking to upgrade my old marlin 3030. I’ve had my eyes on the Weatherby vanguard series 2 in a 308. But I’m still on the fence.

Rifle will serve you fine. Feed it good ammo and you’ll harvest plenty of meat with it.

Now let’s get to the most important part and talk glass.....

If the 3030 has served you well why not keep using it. You could always upgrade the scope.

If you are in an area where you are killing deer with a 3030 and want something new, a 308 is just fine.

Well the 3030 is about to be passed down to my son as it was passed down to me from my pawpaw. So I’ll still have it and will still use it from time to time depending on where I’m hunting

7mm-08 is near impossible to beat. You can take deer, black bear, and elk with it with mild recoil

What is your longest shot?

Son shot a .308 from 7-13 years old. Killed a bunch of deer with it. Outstanding caliber for the Deep South.
Son now shoots a Vanguard in 257 WBY. Good rifle. You might also look at Tikka. If you have the coin, step up to a Sako.

That’s awesome.

I hunt with a Browning X-Bolt hunter in .308.

I am 35.
I have my dad's 30-30. It will be passed on down. Awesome for you! 308, 30-06, and .270 all great deer rifles, with ammo that is easy to find. And the rest everyone mentioned are good. My little sister is 2 for 2 shots on bucks with her 7mm-08

My 02c,

From my experience the go to weapon would be:

Browning MK3 in the 30:06 topped with a trijicon accupoint tr22-2g
2.5x10 x56.

Reasoning: You can kill anything in NA with it and that second shot is instantaneous as is the third if multiple targets present themselves and as you age and the eyes grow dim the clarity of the fiber optic no batteries required glass along with second shots come into play.

Nothing's wrong with a bolt action have a closet full of those and some of these I'm very fond of but if I need ammo for what ever reason it's easy to find common cartridges like the 30:06 some of those others mentioned you might find yourself driving three hours and then somewhere else before you find rounds sometimes you can't find your exact cartridges on speciality rounds and that sucks when you should be on the hunt.

Lastly,

Gunbroker on a holiday is a good place sometimes to score a deal as people tend to get distracted and forget about bidding.

Good luck in your choice!

The 6.5 calibers have received a lot of publicity/advertisement in recent years.

I kind of relate it to a band becoming famous and people hate the band for sometimes nothing other than the band being famous.

Yea some people only see the advertising and have a view of the 6.5 as a laser beam, but I don’t know why people let that bother them.

Just got one passed down to me a few months ago and plan on using it this upcoming season. Which ammo did you use?

I always use the Remington core lokt 150 grains for my 30-30. Dropped deer and pigs in their tracks fine.
