Some of my neighbors just mentioned a coyote killed a neighborhood cat early this morning, an escalation in what are becoming frequent coyote encounters. I live near Metairie Playground / Metairie Country Club, and most of the Jefferson Parish coyote population lives in these parks, and usually congregate north of Airline all the way to the 17th Street canal pumping station just north of Metairie Road.

I have a novelty pellet gun near in the kitchen near the back door to scare off wayward cats that find their way into my backyard but it probably wouldn't do enough to scare off a coyote if my kids (4-6 years old) or I encounter a coyote.

I'm sure the OB will not disappoint it's experience and advice on walking up on a coyote in your backyard or neighborhood. Serious and sarcastic responses alike are expected and appreciated, thanks!

Thank them for thinning out the cats.

It sounds like you need to thank the coyote.

Unfortunately, "scaring off" a coyote is actually more likely to embolden it. Shooting it with a pellet that doesn't kill it may simply lead it to believe that it has less to fear from you. I wouldn't plan on shooting at one unless you intend to take it down... and a novelty pellet gun isn't going to do it. They make some pretty strong PCP Airguns these days... could possibly be an option if you feel it's necessary and can't discharge an actual firearm safely/easily in your neighborhood.

Will defer to the baws on the board though...

Leave them alone, if not, the cats and small dogs will overpopulate and the mountain lions/chupacabra will move in to take advantage.

If youre concerned with coyotes in your neighborhood i suggest you move to a country that doesnt have them. You're never going to even put a dent in the population.

Sounds like a good excuse to buy a big bore air rifle. A .357 or .44 caliber air rifle capable of killing pen raised deer should do the trick on neighborhood coyotes. Check out Keith Warren on YouTube if you have never seen what they are capable of.
The sky is the limit on prices on them is the only drawback.

I live in the less rich part of Metairie than you between the lake and W. Esplanade, off Bonabell. Do me a favor...instead of killing them, see if you can stun a few, trap them, and drop them off in my neighborhood. I've got metric shite ton of cats around here that need thinning out. Not that you need the money, but i'll pay you for the services and even wash your 100K cars for a year. Thanks.

ETA: Jefferson parish has already all but said they can't do much about it. There's been mention that killing them causes them to mate (or so i've heard), and trapping/finding them is very difficult so unless they change strategy or someone gets hurt, it's likely a problem that isn't going anywhere.

every human interaction makes suburban/urban coyotes - as long as they have viable food sources they stay......

roaming pets and pet food left out for access, not to mention the incredible rodent problem in jefferson parish and voila .. you have a smorgasbord for them.

No stray cats or yotes by me, and I live in between yall two. I did let my dogs kill a possum last night though.

Start trapping the cats and bringing them across the canal

OP: It's not very likely you'll get the chance to kill a coyote if you see one. They are skittish as hell, and will run off ASAP. If you've got an area where you can draw them in, a 22 with a can will take them out, and no one will even know. Otherwise, trapping them is the best option IMHO

My main concern is deterring a confrontation, mostly what to teach my kids to do. The Jefferson Parish brochure mentioned coyotes are meek when confronted with humans and suggested making noise, throwing rocks or sticks if necessary and mostly standing your ground.

Maybe an air horn would be the best solution.

I've got friends that live in the same "hood" .. Garden Lane and Bellaire Dr.

OP - I'd recommend a .22 or .25 PCP air rifle; however, you will not put a dent in the population. It's denning season right now (newborn pups, approx. 1/2 dozen per litter) as coyotes are out hunting for an easy meal to feed their young. If you can find the active den, place tainted meat near the entrance. If the coyotes feel threatened by humans, they will move the den overnight. Very hard to get rid of coyotes.

The problem with song dog eradication by air rifle, eventually there will be some hysterical PETA-loving neighbor who sees you and calls 911 claiming "deranged lunatic shooting an assault rifle from his front porch". No telling how the JP SWAT team will handle the situation. If done, you better be discreet and know exactly where the pellet(s) will land.

my PCP rifle

they do make carbine and bullpup versions today

I don’t think your kids are going to run into a coyote unless they are out playing at 4am.

human voice sends them running for cover... not a scream.. but simply a talking human

You can scare a lot of things off with a rock or a stick... If OP believes that the coyotes are an ongoing problem, then long term, he should either leave them be or look to actually take them down... the middle ground is just training them that they have little/nothing to fear.

Thus my qualification... "if you feel it's necessary"

Personally, would just leave them alone unless they are getting particularly bold/interested in my children.
