The guy above said that the inside of the mouth would tell you all you need to know. I was confirming to him that it was white.

The link posted above from Louisianaherps.com by Dorothy has changed my mind. The Op seems to have killed a cottonmouth. I had never, ever seen a light colored cottonmouth nor one with chartreuse tail. Glad to get straight on this.
I mentioned this morning I had a picture I wish I could post. The little snake I encountered is exactly the same as the juvenile cottonmouth, tail and all. Vicious little bastard.

But, why would you think it's a super rare hybrid when it looks exactly like a normal cottonmouth?

1. Because its body is far too slim to be a cottonmouth regardless of its coloration.

2. Copperhead/Cottonmouth hybrids are not "super rare"

Number one is something to think about. The little cottonmouth I have pics of is a chubby little bastard.

I honestly can’t tell which of these responses are trolls and which are serious. As someone who knows snakes, it took all of 2 seconds to identify that as a juvenile Cottonmouth. The pattern does not even remotely resemble a Copperhead. It’s a typical Cottonmouth, nothing even unusual about it.

My vote is for a hybrid cottonhead.

You're totally wrong. It obviously a coppermouth.

1. Wrong.

2. Wrong.

There's a lot of things I don't know much about. Snakes ain't one of them. I've been keeping, researching, photographing, and catching snakes for over thirty years. There's a shelf full of snake books to my left right now. There are about a dozen snakes in my house at the moment.

Like many said before I chimed in, this is 100%, zero doubt, a cottonmouth.

I have a boa, an eastern black kingsnake, an eastern garter, a pair of western hognose, and five of their offspring. And my daughter has two corn snakes.

The hognose pair belonged to my daughter, but she lost interest and I took them over. I'm going to be selling them and the babies soon. Just not my cup of tea.

He looks like an a-hole....did you grant him reprieve or send him to the afterlife?

He wasn’t on our hunt land, just laying on a county road, so I hastened his visit off the road before someone ran him over.
He helped make my decision by not rattling or striking at me while I eased him off the road with a stick.

Can’t say I would have done the same for a cottonmouth or copperhead... despise both...especially copperheads
