I killed this snake a few weeks ago in my yard. Sorry about the size of the pics.

How did you kill it without being able to see it?

Looks like a copperhead to me.

I was going to make fun of you for not knowing the difference, but I can see why one might think it could be either or. The pattern along his back is confusing.
I'm going to say juvenile cottonmouth. His size, chartruese tail tip and head design (both shape and pattern around the mouth) tell me it's a young cotton mouth.

Cottonmouth.
That's the giveaway.

I'm changing my vote after the close up of its head. I agree with the coloration theory. Didnt realize we were looking at an 10 inch snake..

I know what it is, I'm trying to prove a coworker wrong.

Agree. The pattern on a young cottonmouth will have jagged-edged shapes rather than smooth edges, or at least that's how I see them. That's how I tell them apart.

Juvenile Copperheads have the same yellow tail.

Good catch. I forgot they do that too.
I'd say the pattern on the side of it's head is the most identifying feature. The dark strip behind his eye above the mouth is cotton mouth. Copper heads have a more solid colored head.

that dark eyestripe = cottonmouth
