That's very cool Blaze.

I don't think i can shoot groups like that from 10 yds.

Don't look at the trigger the wrong way on that rifle or it will go off Lightest trigger I have ever felt was on one of his rifles.

What I'm saying is, that charge weight is specific to that round you handloaded. So if you used a different powder and used a different charge weight, you could get more than 241 reloads from 1 pound. That's all I'm saying.

powder charge grs. is relative to bullet weight and different powder density. Re: the PPC , average charges are from 25.5 - 31.0 grs.

Blaze, I was looking at getting a 22-250 for plinking and shooting hogs, crows, etc. What's your take on the 22-250 as a plinking rifle. I don't reload and wanted a caliber that ammo was relatively easy to find. I have a Marlin .17 model 917 and kill hogs and such with it. Just wanted something with a little more pep behind it.

22-250 will work like a champ , although something to consider : 223 ammo is more readily available and cheaper on the shelf. Either will work fine as the 22-250 is faster and has flatter trajectory with bullet weight being equal

when shooting pigs and does, I'll bring my custom 20 Beggs (pictured below). 40 gr pill at 4100 fps = scrambled brains DRT. 8 ounce trigger which I'm 100% comfortable with . I'm a meat hunter and prefer shooting does to fill my freezer.

If I want a larger caliber to buck the wind I'll bring my Cooper 257 Ackley Improved or 280 Ackley Improved

I respect the OBs anonymity as I'm ok with my disguised "blackout" hunting look

What type of bullet are you using? At that velocity not many will hold together. That is screaming.

Yea, I understand that. Especially if you're using extruded verusus ball powder.

Berger Match and custom bullets made by several of my friends who own bullet making dies . Lead swaged cores and J4 jackets.

a good friend of mine in Ohio who also shoots a 17 Little Nasty pushed a Berger 15 gr bullet at 4500 fps before it blew up

I'm comfortable with 4050-4100 fps which is where the accuracy node is with my barrel. I do not shoot volume, or let my barrels heat up like prairie dog shooters. Maybe 30-45 shots per year strictly focused on head shots and precision groups.

Holy crap.

How do you go about designing your own dies? That is nuts.

bapple,

you design your intended cartridge with a set of case forming dies that either reduce the neck, or set the shoulder angle back. These "brass making" dies screw into a normal reloading press and often have different sized bushings.

once you get the piece of brass designed to your liking, you can then send it to a reamer manufacturer ( Pacific Tool & Guage) and to a custom reloading die maker ( Hornady or RCBS). You consult with the reamer maker to get the exact angles and brass lengths and a reamer print is made for you to approve. Once approved a custom reamer will be made to chamber your rifle barrel. Neck sizing and bullet seating dies will be made for your designed cartridge and reamer print specs.

several of today's cartridges were originally designed as "wildcats" before being modernized by ammo and rifle makers. The 17 Hornady Hornet, 17 Fireball, and 204 Ruger come to mind.

most were originally designed to shoot varmints and predators

the 17 Shrew is based on a 223 or 221FB case shortened to 1" with a .25" neck. Velocities around 3500-3700 fps. using 8-10 grs of powder under a 20 gr Vmax

the 17 Ackley Hornet yields 3750 fps with a 20 gr pill and 12 grs of powder

the 17 Mk4 is a 221 FB necked down to 17 caliber, been around since the 1962

.257 Roberts Improved. I ran out of reloads and shoot the factory .257 Robts which then fire-forms to Improved brass.
