They could enact a fine so high (say, $500,000) and a prison sentence so severe (say, 10 years in a federal facility) that very few people would risk ruining their lives by hiding a gun.
Then my question would be this - How does the govt. go about collecting them from private party tranactions? Specifically if you own one that was purchased from an individual, gun show, etc.

WELL I THINK
They will Ban ARs and the like in this way.
1). Automatic Felony if caught in possesion outside of your home.
No more range trips.
2). All Semi auto including but not limited to must go through FFL
No more selling yourself
3). No internet orders for ammo.
He will do this by Executive Order when congress breaks for Christmas
Later as a part of some other fricking spending bill he will attempts to sneak in a HUGE tax on all ammo.

I guess you totally missed my point. Irrespective of where a weapon was purchased, if it's illegal to POSSESS it, most would turn it in rather than face a huge fine and a prison sentence if they happened to be caught with it.
What if I offered you (private party transaction) a box of dynamite, or a box of grenades?? Huge penalty & fine -- so most folks would choose to not possess them.

Then there's about to be a lot of honest men made into felons.

No I got your point. But if the burden of proof regarding proving ownership lays at the feet of the govt how will they prove you own one? You honestly believe that every redneck across the country will walk up and turn theirs in? I realize we're discussing a hypothetical but I disagree with your theory.

Dawg is probably one of the most knowledgeable about gun issues on this site, but I really hope he is wrong about his hypothetical scenario.

I feel like there are a lot of shots in the dark here. Nobody knows what's gonna happen yet, people are just pulling shite out their asses. I mean, up until this point Obama hasn't even really done anything anti-gun office.

This. I'll give credit where it's due, even his comments post-Aurora and in the debates weren't all that bad. I don't remember it exactly but he basically said that 'assault weapons' weren't the issue in Chicago, it was cheap unregistered handguns. Leads me to believe he knows laws aren't really going to hinder any criminals, its just a matter of how much pressure his base puts on him.

Said he jut got back from Washington and said the major push was for a ban on all AR's not just prospective ban. Will be a felony if you do not hand over your AR's. Obama will use executive order if can't make it through house and senate.
Assuming that you actually heard this from a guy in a Colt polo, and not from your buddy's brother-in-law's boss, which we all know is actually where this story came from, am I really supposed to believe that one single Colt sales rep personally went to Washington and Forrest Gumped his way into a room where people that matter were actually talking about this?

No shite. Its like a bunch of chicken little's running around professing the sky is going to fall. After all the world is still here after 12/22/12.

Believe it or not, this is true. He had a "F" rating from Handgun Control. All those fake emails about UN treaties and executive order's were really just BS solely intended to work up a political base.

Article II, Section 3, Clause 5
The only part that allows a notion of an EO. The executive order is nothing more than the president issuing a directive to the branch that he controls. The executive branch.
For instance he can give workers the day off like he did for monday. He can also tell ICE not to inforce certain rules.
He CANNOT though create a law on a private citizen. Think of it as a CEO of a company making a decision.

Yep, everyone calm down. Wait til something is announced then go crazy.
I have no doubt something is coming, but nobody knows what.
