I would absolutely not recommend going to Mc109 if you are taking that Xpress bay boat you were talking about in the other thread. If you don’t have a lot of experience down in Venice, then take that recommendation and multiply it by 100000. Not trying to be a dick, but it’s not really the place go exploring without knowing the area and having experience navigating the river. ESPECIALLY in a small bay boat.

I wasnt planning on going to mc109, but I wanted to see physically where it was at for future reference and to see just how far it is considering its a popular amberjack rig. We were planning on going to fouschon tomorrow and fish the surf, and some on the nearby rigs, but the boat had a kinked overflow hose on the livewell from the factory, go figure lol. Venice is a long drive so we are definitely going to find a place to stay in the area and most likely get a guide before doing anything there. I definitely appreciate the concern, BTW. I plan on purchases an older deep v boat in the 20-23' range specifically for offshore.

We’ve all done it but I wouldnt recommend it. Twin engines a must and you’ll want something atleast 25’.

You don't need a 25' boat to go offshore and you don't need twins to go offshore. ]

There are plenty of boats under 20' that are seaworthy in offshore conditions. I would rank having a back up gas tank with fresh, clean fuel more important than having a second motor with modern outboards.

There are people in here that wouldn't have you launch in a brec pond with your tin boat, they also wear masks in their car while driving alone.

I don't see the point in buying a $40,000-$50,000 used boat that i will use 2-5 times per year. Not to mention my truck could barely pull that.. Vs a bay boat that I use nearly every week.

I watch tons of YouTubers that fish 20 miles offshore daily in 18-22'single engine boats. If i was going 50 miles out maybe I would see the need in a 25' twin.

Invest in some good life vest, you are going to need it sooner than later.

Dude. With Venice it’s more than range, distance and capabilities of your boat on a calm day. The river vs the gulf makes for strange currents, waves, etc. also the fog and commercial traffic are extremely dangerous. But you do you hurricane2020.

I run a 24' single engine deep draft bay boat out of fourchon and Venice both a good bit. I pick my days VERY carefully, in a 3000 lb boat with a 100 gallon fuel tank and every safety feature available to man.

Stay inshore bud, and get some experience with someone who has experience. I dont want to be answering a pompom for a bunch of kids in a floatinf beer can 20 miles out

Would it be a better idea to just go on a charter trip if only going a few times a year?

Or Are they too expensive?

Because I’m sure Hurricane has no budget and money is no object to him like most other posters here.

You have to pick your weather windows, almost always in the summer. I regularly fish 25-30 miles offshore out of Fourchon and Venice in a 20’ single engine Hydrasport Ocean Skiff, but I’m (usually) pretty cautious about the right weather.

The fish are actually out here in the summer, I would bring an extra 5 or 10 gallons of fuel though.

I'm not really a fan a charters, I'm probably going to do one or to so I learn the area and its hazards a little. But for the most part I would rather figure out where to fish on my own. To me fishing is a puzzle, and puzzles are only fun if you don't know where the next piece goes.
