i would buy in .308 caliber. I love me some .308 rifles even though i know some ppl love the 6.5 creedmore.
I would also try to get like a 20inch threaded barrel.

I shoot a Remington 700 chambered in .25-06 and I have zero complaints. My 2 oldest kids each killed their 1st deer with this gun. I bought it 12 years ago and it has performed perfectly.

I've been eying the CVA Cascade (Personally I'm looking at 300 Win Mag) which would be fine for where you're hunting and also be good if he ever does any hunts for larger game and/or longer shots.
300 isn't that bad of a round for a first gun but if you think it might be overkill for him the same gun in .270 win would be great. 270 is time tested and has proven to be effective at taking deer, antelope and even elk and moose as long as your not reaching out too far.
As it has been stated here many times be careful of designer rounds, they're cool but can be hard to find and $$$$$. If this is a hunting set up I'd stick to the time tested rounds.

Another vote for T3 and another vote for popular cartridges.
Not some newcomer that will be a flash in the pan you can’t find at a little store in Montana or will be a cartridge of the past in 10 years because some bean head was trying to reinvent the wheel.

Christensen arms 6.5 PRC. Awesome rifle

6.5 PRC.
Why kid a kid a niche round for his first deer rifle. Ammo is available online but at $2.50-3 a round.
about the best combination of light recoil, foot-pounds at distance, and flat trajectory out there. Sight it in and kill ten deer this year, all for less than $50 in ammo. The optics are where the money ends up.
Mine is a Tikka T3X Wideland, Nightforce NX8 4x32

I’d go .308 simply for ammo availability. 6.5 was a bitch to find for awhile but you could always find .308.

I would go with a Remington 700 SPS. But we hunt mostly in blinds, so a shorter rifle is handy

I still shoot the same 30-06 I have had for 38 years and it's great. Im not sure whats good now.
buy him the same "brand" as your current 30-06 in a different caliber like 308.

Totally depends on the budget. For a good, affordable mid range gun the bolt on the Winchester XPR is fantastic and it is a tack driver. Just bought my brother a Ruger American Gen II as a wedding gift and that thing is pretty sweet as well. Can find both for about $550

Tikka T3x in the caliber of your choosing. .270, .308, .30-06, or 6.5 creedmoor.
It's going to be accurate, lightweight, and reliable. From a functional and financial perspective, it doesn't make any sense to buy anything else. It's the best general purpose hunting rifle on the market.

To the OP I just received a bass pro catalog and saw they have a manufacturers rebate right now and a t3x stainless is 804$ and the blued is 694$

That's a steal. It's hard to overstate the bargain that a tikka T3 is, especially the blued ones. It takes vast amounts of money to achieve the level of accuracy and reliability you get from a T3, and it probably won't be light. It'll be something like an accuracy international L96.
Back when the blued T3's were $450 I should have bought a dozen of them. If they were $1500, they'd still be the best deal going in hunting rifles.

I have a franchi momentum I love the way it feels looked at the Tikka as well
