Broom finish on brick

To lighten up our brick color and given it a old timey look...we did what I've always called a broom finish...but as you can see in the pics, the bottom has washed off substantially after 5 years a rain.
Is it really as simple as getting mortar and a broom and brushing it on evenly?

Honestly, I like the bottom better, I would pressure was the top 
But I doubt it is as easy as just brooming some mortar on there, I would talk to a bricklayer, but I will bet good money it will never turn out right and match

It’s called smear. Yes, it’s as simple as brushing mortar on with one of those thick bristled hand brush.

My house has that but it’s much heavier and it’s with tan mortar. I think it’s called slurry coating.
I did the same on the base that I made for my Primo and also on my outdoor fire place.
Used a masonry brush to “paint” it on the brick.

It's called a sack finish. Just get you some pre mix mortar and it's not hard. Be advised though, once it dries it's pretty much there for good so you may wanna do a test square first to make sure the wife realizes it's probably not going to match the top
Also, whoever said to pressure wash brick, absolutely not, unless you enjoy blowing the face off your brick and fricking up your mortar joints.

To each there own obviously, but I never understood why you pay $400-500 per thousand for bricks only to cover them with mortar. Brick layers love it though cause they can be messy with their mortar joints.
If you want to clean the top layer go to a brick company and buy a cleaning solution. Some form of acid or something, gets the mortar off the bricks

Funny that everyone (even in this thread) calls it something totally different. 
Whatever our brick layers did originally did not last very well, because we lightly power washed the dirt off the bottom of the brick after it was built, and all of the extra mortar came off immediately.
ETA- i HATE painted brick

Same here. Why use brick if you're going to paint, then it becomes just one more maintenance nightmare in the long run.
Dumb idea for sure and turns the whole "I'm going with brick to make life easier" a waste of time and money.

Yeah that looks great man.
this is pretty much what i'm trying to accomplish along with painting my shutters and such the same color. Its a damn shame my house is 5 years old and with all of the brand new construction around me, it is obvious my house is older. Trying to freshen it up.

The main thing to remember if you do it is to make sure that the brick is wet prior to "painting" the mortar on.
If you don't it will just wipe off. That may be what happened to the OP's wash.
