My last hunting lab was a black British lab. He was an incredible hunting dog.
This is good to hear, cause I just got an English lab. 10 wks old and a fricking poop machine. I have high hopes for her.

My broken lab as my grandson calls her,is a mix of the two. She was doing great till he got hit by a car.
Now, she is just a pet that eats and eats and eats and eats. Well, you get the picure. She is way over weight.

I have both and not much difference besides the looks.
Find a good breeder and buy a dog

Brits are smaller , mine is 50#. Quieter, mine will sit in the blind for hours and not make a sound. And much more expensive. Mine was $2000 as a pup. But he's got all the drive you will ever want and is a hunting machine. Wouldn't trade him. Manners are impeccable. Awesome dog. He's 2 now. Black by the way. I can send the op some pics if you shoot me your email.

I have a British and an American. I've had another British that hunted 15 years. All of our club dogs, besides mine, are American. I'll never, ever spend another penny on an American. The British temperament and looks are far superior, to me. Awesome breed. I love my little Red Fox male.

Let me clear the air for you. Major difference is british has much higher dog IQ than the american but the brits also tend to smell much worse due to higher production of oil in there stool.
If I was you Id get a silver lab they are best of both world plus they look really cool especially when you put face paint on them in the blind. Silver lab came from crossbreed with weimeraner generations back so you have smaller size and wittier temprament good luck

American labs are simply british labs with greyhound bred into them from way back.
The black british lab is the original duck hunters dog. Act accordingly.

Both British and American labs have excellent pedigrees lines that work great and can compete against each other with similar results.
But
Working with a lot of dogs with upper end pedigrees of both, I find on average the British labs can't compete as well as the American labs. The key words here are "on average".

A buddy of mine had a British lab. Imo, they look a lot better than American labs.

My American lab, Beaux. Excellent temperament, lots of energy, extremely friendly, loves the water, retrieves anything, has a beautiful coat, and is extremely obedient. He's probably the best looking lab I've seen, in my humble opinion. Very lean and muscular and well-proportioned.

Looks like there is a bit of confusion.
American lab British lab and English lab are all a little different. My ranking is
1. British
2. American
3. English

I have had 2 merican and 1 brit – I like the merican as they are a little more driven. Round the house they calm down but once you get into the field they can drive you nuts and need to show them who is boss. An e collar is required for training. One recommendation as others have said is get a dog from a good breeder, an acquaintance bought a lab off craigslist and has tried to turn him into a field trail dog, he has put hours and hours into that dog, its a pet not a hunting dog .... dog has no drive, couldn’t find a cheeseburger in a phone booth. You know the old saying you cant make chicken salad from chicken sh** ...... I dont like big dogs and my american males are no more than 75lb in fighting trim
