A few days ago I was motoring across Breton Sound and came across a horrible sight... Thousands of big mature redfish flying dead on the surface. They went on for miles and miles. I know anyone out there recently can confirm this. I took pictures and video. The fish were stacked up in a rip line with 'pogie foam'. That nasty brown foam that is a byproduct of pogie ships harvesting. The miles of dead redfish were also a byproduct of pogie harvest. Tell me how it is ok to protect the mature fish with our ,one over 27' limit, for fishermen but these boats are allowed to kill TONS of weight in mature spawning size redfish. I don't know what can be done but I think everyone should know the amount of waste going on out there just to make a buck off the pogies. Not to mention all the trout and other small fish ground up along with the pogies... We need to figure out a way for these ships to safely release bullreds or we can expect a big negative impact on redfish populations when our brood stock drops every summer from this slaughter...

They've gotta be dying because they aren't offloading them soon enough. Probably dying on the deck.

Doesn't take long for a bullred to suffocate.

Quick Hijack:

I went out with the Captain who reported this last year. He doesn't have the nicest vessel, but it beats the hell out of the boat I don't have.

What I liked the most about him was that we had to tell HIM when we wanted to go in. You fish until you say uncle. We tapped out at 3 PM, and this after crushing the trout early, then hunting the marsh for Reds. This dude really loves to fish and isnt in a hurry to get back to the dock like plenty of others.

I've had my fill recently with the protection of large scale commercial agriculture practices by the government. While simultaneously putting more and more restrictions on us.

WTF?

Are you referring to aquabusiness practices...aka commercial fisherman or row-crop agribusiness?

Edit addition - that story is sickening

Strong commercial fishing lobby + inept, corrupt governing bodies = devastating bycatch.

Sorry to get all political but this crap just pisses me off.

Pogey boats use large sein nets to surround schools i pogey which are spitted from the air by planes. Problem all the predator fish chasing the pogeys get caught too. Therefore become bycatch. And no there is no effort to release quickly.
