How much do you fish, if you normally fill the freezer with fish to eat and now you can't and have to buy additional food from the store, have you now been impacted?
If it's about this, sell the boat, rods, gear, etc. and just buy food from local grocery to begin with.

If it is about what?
There are many families in South Louisiana that have freezers full of fish, shrimp, crabs, etc that they harvest throughout the year. If they have a way to supply a sustainable food supply for their families while enjoying the outdoors, why should they sell this equipment for a one time dollar amount to buy food at the store?

I'd just as soon they use their 'extra money' to fix the fuggin coast...or at least put it towards some research regarding coastal erosion. You know how much money that spill SAVED me last year?? Couldn't go fishing...couldn't spend money on gas, bait, launch, and gas, and gas...and got to work more since I wasn't taking off to fish. Please...

If anything the spill saved rec fisherman from spending money. How did the spill finacially impact a recreational fisherman? Pain and suffering?

Look at it this way. What if you were paying for a new boat at the time when all the waters were you fished at were closed to boating and fishing. Say that boat cost you $150,000 with say a monthly note and insurance note of say $1500. Hell, you just lost over 6 grand due to the oil spill. So no, everybody that owns a boat or fishing gear and wasn't able to fish due to the oil spill was at a lost.

I have a big problem about this due to the fact that I had just moved one of my boats down to Venice a week before the spill. Then all hell breaks out with the spill and now I had a boat that just sat there. OK, everything will work out. SURE,it will. Fast forward in Nov, I find out that I'm sick with a heart problem and I will not be able to run my own boat anymore offshore as I had done for well over 30 years.

Life is just to short for shite like that oil spill to happen. So, glassman, what did the oil spill save me? The last spring/summer time fishing I would be able to do on my own! What would you say if someone told you that you couldn't do something that you did for over 30 years?

I feel for you man, you lost your last summer of independent offshore fishing and that is truly something that you cannot put a price-tag on. The very fact that you own 3 boats is what will make the claims people stick your application at the very bottom of the stack or in to the wastebasket all together. In BP's opinion, they "saved" you money in terms of fuel, less wear and tear on boat/motors, and fishing expenses. You didnt lose any income as result of the spill, rather you lost the opportunity to enjoy a natural resource and the equipment you use for that purpose. I feel your pain, but i honestly don't think BP owes us a dime. If for some reason i was awarded some money it would go right in to my boats fuel tank (and eventually back to an oil co.) and probably to Sand-dollar/Bridgeside/Moran's Marinas.

I think most fishermen would agree after fuel, bait, tackle, ice etc it is much cheaper to go buy fish, shrimp etc at the grocery store. This summer fuel will be $4+ a gallon and we usually run 70-90 miles a day. 2-3 gallons a mile those fish are expensive...especially if you don't limit out.

If the NFL locks out this year, I suppose I will file a claim to compensate for the lack of use of my tailgating tents, coolers, cookers, flasks, seat cushions, and my 60"HD tv that will sit dark on Sundays...
