Just bought my first boat and just trying to think about all the must haves in the boat other than life jackets, whistle, and fire extinguisher. It’s a bay boat I will use for both fresh and salt water. What other things are a must have in the boat. TIA

What is the purpose of the boat? Fishing, parting?

Other than the obvious things to make it float, run, and get it to the water:
Life vest for everyone on board
Throwable life preserver
Fire extinguisher
Horn or air horn
Nav and anchor lights if boating between dawn and dusk.
Numbers and registration sticker
Registration papers

Compass. An actual physical compass.
The scariest shite in the world is to be in the marsh or open water and lose your bearing.

^^^this has saved my arse
Throw cushion, a compact tool set, electrical box with butt splicers/ different amp fuses used on boat etc..., anchor/rope, bumper/fenders/dock lines for docking.
If going offshore, flares/epirb/vhf radio + antenna/gaff/bait net/gloves/cutting board and knife

what kind of boat? Bass boat, pontoon, ski boat, center console? where you plan to take it makes a difference for what you need.

Keep some kind of cutters on board in case someone has a hook go in their skin. Need to be strong enough to snip the hook in half.

floating boat cushion, just got checked by the sheriff on Saturday.
A few small things that make oh shite moments a little better: extra plug, extra fuses, small first aid kit, small jumper cable to jump from trolling motor battery to starting battery, small tool set (couple screw drivers, cresent wrench, side cutters, etc.), electrical tape, zip ties, extra trailer hub in your truck.
