Looking to get back into frogging, but it's been 20 years since I've done it. The frog gigs I use to have were just given to me by a buddy and I gave them back to him years ago. What's the best way to go about making them? Also, I can't remember the color of the eyes to look for to differentiate between frog and snakes I'm gonna be going with my 7 y/o and he's gonna have to do the gigging because he doesn't know how to drive the boat yet.

ETA: Also, any recommendations for a good frogging light, preferably under $100?

These days, the lights are so good there is no mistaking what you're grabbing.

He'll do better just grabbing them.

We lay on the deck of the boat and catch them by hand.

this is the light I use. I need to get a good headlamp.

amazon

ETA: might try for something with a more focused beam. The one I linked is a flood and casts a bunch of shadows, idk if it spooks the frog but it's a maybe. My cousin has this one and loves it. LINK

They sell the heads at Academy or online. All you need to do is affix them to some kind of pole with adhesive and screw. We used to use cane for the flounder gigs. Anything will do.

I've only made flounder gigs but I imagine it's the same for frog gigs.

We used cane as well growing up. I haven't been in years, but like everyone else has said the last few times we just grabbed them

I saw an old timer frogging with a net on a long pole, it kind of closed in on the frogs when he scooped them, it had a smallish hoop with a really long net. For a 7 year old I would try that out.

That's for frogs on the bank. Doesn't work in the water.
