Elk is my favorite game meat. That said, I really liked nilgai and oryx when I had it and would love to put one in the freezer. Never had axis.
YMMV though, I’ve eaten some damn good meals made with javelina.

Have had axis, fallow, red stag, oryx, nilgai etc and my favorite is American Buffalo by far. Had 300# of Ground meat with 10% beef fat makes best burgers u will have! Likely run out this year and will have to figure out how to get another one!

Second this.
I have had multiple Axis and I do love some Nilgai. The best by far is the American Bison. If you have never eaten it, it is the perfect meat. Nothing like store bought bison. The bonus is you kill a small one and still get plenty of meat. My son downed an 800 pound bison 4 years ago and we stacked the freezer. The wife and daughter loved it and it cooked well in any dish.

I'm a huge fan of Nilgai and Axis. Two best tablefare in the exotic world in my opinion!

You can order it and have it delivered. I found a place off IG that sells it straight from Hawaii. I guess Axis are like pests over there and this outfit that sells it will go on a massive hunting expedition from time to time for their supply. I am always informed when they have a restock or basically when their team goes out and goes pew pew all night. In fact, they usually have a drawing for people to come from stateside to get on the hunt. Company is called Maui Nui or something like that.
Meat is obviously pricey but not crazy. They sell it an all kinds of cuts.

I have a buddy down in Brownsville that has a ranch that has an abundance of Nilgai that he would trade a swordfishing trip for a Nilgai shoot!

according to someone I trust completely, zebra was the best meat he ate in Africa, which included kudu, cape buffalo, eland, impala, warthog, waterbuck, nyala and giraffe

I didn't care for it all that much. Maybe watching it get skinned and it looking like a horse (or donkey) made it a turn off for me. I have a hard time thinking that anyone would rate anything over Kudu. That is possibly the best tasting meat out there.

You can get nilgai hunts for under $1500, I’m not sure you can get a sword fishing trip for under $2500 and really closer to $3500 or so? That’s not much of an offer, ha.
Op, for strictly meat hunts one of the goals is to kill the animal as quickly as possibly and then manage the processing well.
There’s going to be a big difference between a rutting male that’s wounded and chased for miles, left in the hot sun until found, then not hung to let the meat rest. Compared to a deer that’s dropped in its tracks, gutted, cooled immediately, and hung for some time.
That’s why a bigger gun is always better for this type of hunt. When you are back country hunting and need a light gun or something a smaller caliber is one thing.

Get a new scope for the 270, and sight it in with a good quality Nosler Partition cartridge. It will be more than capable at taking down a Nigali.

how many times you planning on shooting it?
Posted on 7/14/26 at 7:57 am to Mr Sausage
At least a couple times through the shoulder. Like a friend told me when hunting bull elk, keep shooting until its on the ground. One and done might work for a whitetail deer, but not on larger big game animals.
