My son and I would like to take a guided trip soon for specs in the marsh. I haven't been in about 10 years (last time was to Big Lake), and don't know when the best time to go is.

TIA for the response.

It's hard to beat may and June for trout fishing. The trout are normally in the lower estuaries at that time(lower lakes, bays, barrier islands). If fishing trout in the marsh is what you want then November and December are my favorites for catching easy limits. Weather is the limiting factor with trout fishing.

For trout under the birds and generally much easier fishing, it's hard to beat this month. As for catching big trout, it is June.

A few years ago, we went out of Delacroix with Sweetwater the weekend before Thanksgiving and had a 100 fish limit and 3 nice reds from two spots by 11am.

November can literally be on fire for trout as you start getting some solid fronts by then pushing all the remaining shrimp out of the marsh causing bird activity and trout feeding in general to go off the hook. However, the downside is those fronts can kill a day or 2 or more of fishing with the wind and pressure change, so you are taking a bigger risk waiting till then if you are trying to pinpoint one exact time to book a trip.

Me and some buddies went fishing in Golden Meadow last May. Around the middle of May. We hammered them. Caught about 30-40 specks and about 20 redfish. They weren't all keepers but a good bit were. Either way we had fun.

What exactly are you looking for? As one poster said, you can catch some big mommas wading fishing in the winter months (Dec/Jan). In May/June you have the ability to smash a limit of small specks.

If you are going to fish Big Lake, I personally like the fall (around Oct/Nov). Still have the ability to catch a nice limit of specks, and the fall flounder run is fun as frick to fish.

Personally I avoid the spring because those large cold fronts can drop a lot of rain, which makes the water pretty fresh. Also not a lot of bait in the lake.

Like others stated, September/October is usually good but if you're wanting trophies I'd say between now and the end of May but that's all weather dependent. I've caught 3 trout over 7 pounds between Sabine and Calcasieu all in the month of May; definitely not trophies for some that fish regulary but anything over 7 for me is a trophy. If you want numbers really anytime late summer is good and if you want bigger limits go to Grand Isle and catch a limit of 12 inchers.

June-Dec
I caught fish durin our snow day dec 8th in lake Charles and limits days after. Dry winter and the pickings get easy from LC to the lake. Shrimps will start leaving the marsh after the first cool front either in sept or oct and the birds will follow. Birds will start picking again first or second week of May barring a turd floater until the end of June.

I like June and early July in the summer as I find the weather gets a little more stable. May fishing is good also but still tend to get a lot of wind out of nowhere. I bring a couple groups from out of state to fish with me over the summer I like to schedule in the outlined time above it's no garuntee on weather but it tends to be more predictable.

As far as fall give me November.

For me personally, May through early August when they move out to the surf and outer bays. I love a Carolina rig bite on the beach.
