Not looking to do field trials or even necessarily train for trailing/hunting. Really just looking for general obedience and commands. What do you recommend?

Family dog. Richard Wolters
Water Dog made my black lab the the best duck dog I could have hoped for.

Water dog. Read it cover to cover and followed the steps religiously when I was 16. I’m 24 now and my black lab is great both in the blind and as a pet. You get what you put into a dog. The more time the better.

The worst "trained" dogs I've seen were given treats when they did what they were supposed to. Also, don't be afraid to put the fear of God in your dog. You'll both be happier in the long run.
What do you recommend?
That's my advice

I agree with the Water Dog recommendation. I’d add to that Retriever Training by Robert Milner
I used a combination of the two.

While training my lab; at about 4 months when we started force fetch and blinds I’d carry a 2ft piece of hose in my back pocket. Give em a few seats with that and they won’t be so hard headed.
PSA: he’s 8.5 now and still a hard headed arse sometimes

Retriever Training for the Duck Hunter, Robert Milner. It lists what to do every day of training and when to move forward or repeat a training day. Follow it and you’ll end up with a jam up dog

British training for American retrievers
I've read and used a lot, but this one, to me, was groundbreaking in the way I viewed dog training in general. Great read.
Even if you choose another book to use, you really should read this. My best advice would be to read as much as you can and decide what works best for you and your dog. This book was a great insight to dog psychology in general.

As everyone has said water dog. Read it first front to back then sort of follow along through the chapters while training the dog.

I used the Fowl Dogs dvd series.
Water Dog is also good, although considered outdated by most trainers. Still a good easy read that gives you more info if nothing else

I actually have a copy of wd in my bookcase at work that needs a new home. Probably 40 yrs old.
Someone who needs it post address and it will be in the mail Thursday.
All I ask is when you’re done do the same thing so no coloring or notes.
