Outside of going out west (great option but done it multiple times), I'm looking for some summer outdoor adventures up north to escape the heat. Something with cooler nights, no humidity, etc that are also outdoorsy to a degree. I have 3 daughters and a wife, so I'm not talking back country Alaska. But here is my list so far, any other suggestsions? Looking at Early August right before school starts of 2023, so I know we may be pushing our luck compared to June with warm weather.

1. Puget Sound, Washington rental house on the water - crabbing, fishing, etc.
2. Houseboat rental in Canada, Minnesota, etc. - Walleye, perch fishing, maybe travel to a new city in Canada
3. New England Lake House or Beach house - I'm trying to figure out if you can go recreationally harvest lobster anywhere? Or maybe go on a guided trip? I'm not gonna pay $1200 to go check some lobster traps though. Clamming, fishing, etc.

Any other suggestions?

Portland, Maine has a charter that takes people out to go run lobster traps. We didn't do it, but friends had a great time.

Just got back from Bar Harbor, Maine. Awesome trip highly recommend it. Spent a couple of days in Acadia national park which hosts bunch of outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming, camping, stargazing, fishing, bike riding, etc.

Don't know how its going to be in August, but the temp ranged from 45-70 over the past few days.

Well, the OP mentioned that as #1 in his post and asked for alternatives. I didn't feel the need to rename the first place on his list.

I'm going to say 3 suggestions, all in the upper midwest.

1. Put-In-Bay, OH. It's awesome. Nobody i know has ever been but me but it's a great time. It's nickname is "Key West of the North" for good reason.

2. Mackinac Island, MI.

3. Wisconsin Dells

Caves - Mammoth Cave and half a dozen others within a few hours of Nashville, drive and tour in the coolness. Stay at a water park if you can.

How busy are are these places in late summer? I don't mind busy, but I'm outside of the Destin area. So I really prefer to go to places that are not slammed. Obviously its a summer destination and some crowds.

From LA, currently in MN for awhile:

Northern MN is really nice late August, early September. Highs in the 70-80s, lows 40-60s.

Boundary waters canoe area could be fun if they’re a little more adventurous (rent canoes, paddle only lakes connected by “portages”).

Voyageurs National Park is similar but you can rent houseboats or a fishing boat. Would recommend getting a permit soon if you’re interested.

Or really just pick any lake north of Minneapolis and you would be good.

More towards August will be warmer and more swimming friendly weather. By mid September, nights can easily be in the 40s consistently.

Bring a jacket (for insurance) if heading up north in late August. We froze our ___'s off in Wausau one late August. And it wasn't just us being from the south.

As for idea's a guided overnight river trip usually comes with gourmet eats and has the built in caveat of being pretty chill. No driving around, limited standing in line, or having rushed todo's.

My mom is from the Detroit area. Many years ago we family vacationed in the Upper Peninsula area around July 4th holiday. The night of July 4, my dad and I slept in the car because everyone else was in the camper. It got down to 32 degrees that night, I will never forget it. Beautiful area to be outdoors. I remember it getting fairly warm during the day.

I'm strongly considering this at some point. Would be awesome to have days in the 60-70s to fish in August but sit around a camp fire in the 40-50s at night.

The only problem is they are so far north, 4.5 hours from Minneapolis.

I'm starting to look somewhere closer to Toronto or maybe Lake Champlain next to Montreal we could fly into.

The Canadian border at Lake of the Woods and Voyeagers NP is 25 hour drive for me. I enjoy a good road trip but I don't want to do 50 hours of driving this trip.
