re: Cancer breakthroughs

I think the biggest positive is that the medical field is learning more as a whole about individual cancers. You have to think of each cancer type as a different animal- caused by different mutation, different response to surgery/chemo/radiation/immunotherapy.

“Minor details” like a molecular marker being positive or negative can have huge impact on treatment and survival.

In the last 10 years, massive advances in tonsil and base of tongue cancer have been made, such that generally 90%+ survive it (if the patient is p16+/ HPV RNA+). Treatments have been advanced to decrease side effects without decreasing cure. There is a blood test that can theoretically catch recurrence very early, but this is still being worked out.

Thyroid cancer has a 90%+ general survival rate, and there are new immunotherapy medications to manage metastatic thyroid cancer (which is fortunately rare).

However other things like cancer in the mouth (tongue, cheeek, etc) and voice box (larynx) are very different than the tonsil and things have not changed much recently.

Overall things are improving and I think will continue to do so.

Tried on both at Scheels (tGOAT outdoor store) and the Vital’s felt better on my feet than pronghorn.

Would recommend ordering from Scheels if you order online. Excellent customer service, easy returns, business owned by a God fearing, America first, family from the Dakotas.

Hunted this season in MN in Danner Vital 400g. Temps ranged 20s-60s. Hiking the SE MN bluffs in them was significantly better than my mucks (which have a place, just not in the hills). Added Arctic shield boot covers with a hand warmer for colder days. A great hiking boot for long walks and warm toes for cold sits. Favorite boots I’ve ever owned.

Am originally from LA and they’d prolly be too warm for early season, but they do make an un insulated version.

Getting there is tough. I almost included that but my post was already long enough.

Door county is also great and an easy drive if you fly into Green Bay. We went last August and the weather was amazing. Warm afternoons (kids swimming) but a light jacket needed at night.

View of Sister Bay

Al Johnson’s. Touristy but worth going to, and their beer garden next door is nice and kid friendly.

Breakfast at Al Johnson’s. Worth it but go early.

Door Country Brewing is worth a stop. Pebble beach is also worth a stop. Public walk-in beach, not as busy as other beaches due to the rocks but tons of kids swimming.

America, just because.

We stayed between Sister Bay and Ephraim at a cheapish bed and breakfast. Can stay in Sister Bay for walking access to stores and shops but we were <5 min drive and it worked just fine. This area also books up quick.
From LA, currently in MN for awhile:

Northern MN is really nice late August, early September. Highs in the 70-80s, lows 40-60s.

Boundary waters canoe area could be fun if they’re a little more adventurous (rent canoes, paddle only lakes connected by “portages”).

Voyageurs National Park is similar but you can rent houseboats or a fishing boat. Would recommend getting a permit soon if you’re interested.

Or really just pick any lake north of Minneapolis and you would be good.

More towards August will be warmer and more swimming friendly weather. By mid September, nights can easily be in the 40s consistently.
Depends on application and water clarity.

I think it’s a less common to go full fluoro, except some crankbaits and jerkbaits where you want a little stretch and line that sinks. In this case I like 12# straight fluoro.

I like 30# braid and a 20# leader for jigs, Texas rigs, chatterbaits and other single hook lures. I fish in relatively clear (3-4’ visibility) with a lot of thick grass. I think it doesn’t matter at all if water is dirty.

Base your leader weight on how much cover is around (8# for open water, on up from there depending on cover). To me it’s worth getting a nice brand since you’ll only use 4-6’ of leader at a time typically, and I’ve liked sunline.
Never had riverside. May need to try.

Benoit’s in brusly, but I don’t love theirs.

Best Boudin in WBR?

Posted by E Pluribus Unum on 3/7/22 at 8:42 pm
Best boudin on the west side of the river- what ya got?
Been outta town for awhile and really wanting some boudin on this trip back.

Wish I could make it to Krotz Springs but this is a quick in and out trip.

TIA everyone!
Auke Lake?

The rope swing on the East side is awesome!
I moved from LA to MN
I fish a reservoir that is a designated duck sanctuary. It has been slammed with teal for weeks. This morning was the first time I’ve seen mallards.

They may not have made their way down to y’all, as they’re just showing up here and I’m 1000 mi north. Anecdotal so take it FWIW

Not the usual for this thread but I couldn’t not buy these
I like the breast meat cut into strips and fried. Haven’t figured out a way to eat the leg meat and like it.
Public land, SE MN. Called a trio of two year olds off the field in the background (private land), on to public and smacked one. First public land bird. First year living up here.

Hunted public land pretty hard for 4 days. Had two different birds hang up about 75 yards out. I became convinced that the public land birds, if they can see your decoy setup, ain’t coming that final distance. They want you to come to them. So finally got on another gobbler. Got to within 100yds or so with some thick stuff between me and him so he couldn’t see the decoys. Start some soft yelps, pot call purrs, and diaphragm clucks. Get a good response. Two hens show up looking for their friend. Turn my head 90° from the direction of the gobbler, cup and project the same soft yelps sideways. Get a good response. 5 min later same calls but craning my neck around the tree I’m sitting under and project behind me. He gobbled twice in the span of a couple minutes and had clearly cut the distance. I stayed silent, and he showed up about 40yds out in the thick stuff. Took the first shot I got through an opening.

Got a Public Land Turkey

You baws been mad at the turkeys lately so I thought I’d share my story here (next post). Grew up in LA, hunted there along the MS river on both sides for turkeys and deer. Moved to Minnesota and have had a good year. Shot a nice 8 pt with my bow on a 20 acre piece I got permission for and killed a gobbler on public land 20 minutes from my house.

That wouldn’t bother me a bit. Wife is on board so we may have a problem.
New to the game. Found a nice deal for a nice starter.
