Been fishing my entire life with spinning reels. I continually hear friends tell me how much more accurate bait casters are. What is an entry level reel and rod cost? Also, what is the lightest weight that I can throw on the bait caster? Thanks

10lb test is as low as I would go. AG Black Max combo can't be more than $75 I would think.

Academy is having a sale right now. 25% off their rod and reel combos. You can get a good setup for $50-$75

Don’t go cheap. You’ll be backlashing a cheap reel and want to give up on it. I had a cheap one for first baitcaster and backlashed so much I didnt touch it for a year. Tested a buddy’s reel that used nicer gear and my backlashes were much less frequent

Lews speed spool combo from Academy would be a great start. Can’t go wrong with a 6’6” medium heavy rod and a 6:3:1 reel, and a spool of Berkeley trilene 15lb test.

Those were $120 in West Monroe while the bare reel was $130

This.

The braking on the cheaper reels have come a long way. Just turn the dial all the way up and start slowly backing off. Once you start getting overruns, you’ve backed off too much. It’ll take some practice, but it’s worth it.

I’d recommend spending $200 or so if you can afford it. Johnny Morris Signature combo from Bass Pro Shops is an excellent setup. The reviews are terrific on those rods and reels. I’ve had mine for a decade and it’s still trucking nicely.

I have 2 of these reels and they are my favorites.

I would buy a reel and rod separately. In my opinion the rods that come with the combo’s are generally crap. What’s your budget?

Shimano SLX combo going for $150 at academy right now. By themselves the rod and reel are $99 apiece. The rod will be better than the cheap chinese shite you find in the lower price range, and the reel is really good for the money.

I’m like you Folsom. Always have used spinning. Have some friends that give me shot about not using baitcasters. Funny thing, they talk all this shite, and when we go together, they spend 50% of the trip trying to deal with birds nests and other issues. I just laugh at them.

That said I’ve decided to try it out for a while too.

Either your friends are inexperienced or you're over exaggerating. Casting gear is a tool with a time and a place, like spinning gear. A good fisherman should be comfortable with both, no sense in saying one is clearly superior to the other.

Very true. Each one has its advantages. I only fish for sacaleit with spinning reels. Only fish bass and specks with bait casters. Spinning reels are far better for light tackle.

Med or Med light rod will be best option for a newbie.
Use a two handed casting style for control and don’t try to sling it a mile. Lews reels are imo the most user friendly and tweek faster than shimano.

I fished with a 13 bait caster recently and it was a very good real. No regular bearings--some kind of ceramic deal or coated bearings. Very good in salt water.

This is a solid combo academy has right now. I’ve been using the 13s for a lil while now and they’re great reels.
