The US Fish and Wildlife wants landowners and managers to shoot about 500,000 barred owls to help protect the the northern spotted owl. That might make a good looking mount in the game room.

quote:

To save northern spotted owls from the barred owl onslaught, the FWS said in a draft environmental impact statement that they plan to initially cull around 20,000 of the owls in the first year, followed by 13,397 birds a year in the first decade, 16,303 a year in the second, and 17,390 birds each year in the third decade. This is due to start possibly as early as 2025. The plan details that landowners or land managers could apply for a permit to kill the owls, and that a large-bore shotgun would be the choice weapon, to be substituted for capture and euthanasia when people are close.

Saw this today and it’s pretty messed up. This is nature doing its thing. Adapt or go extinct. Or in this case hybridize and possibly become a new species in the long term

I once offered to shoot an owl I had in my best turkey spot for Johnny Jr. He was an old hand that lived his whole life on my granddad’s farm. He declined. Owls are nuffin but fevvers! This guy ate crows. He would know.

Hell no. Why would I want to shoot an owl? They are awesome. Anything that eats mice is awesome.

Not only that, but owls will basically have a conversation with you in the woods. I love owls.

Will an owl kill and eat a human?

Several years ago I was climbing up to a lock-on stand in a steep bottom. I reached the lock-on and had just stepped into it when something big hit me in the back of the head - it felt like I had been beaned at 40 yds with a football. Fortunately, I had one hand firmly around the trunk of the tree or I would have fallen and probably died. After I had properly strapped myself in, I took account of my condition and noticed that my orange beannie was missing from my head. I didn't really know what to think, but when it got light enough, I looked down at the base of my tree and saw my hat and a huge dead owl laying on the ground.

Thirty minutes later that damned owl almost knocked me out of the tree again when he jumped up and flew off with an incredible whoosh. It scared me so bad I nearly crapped myself.

I really believe he intended to kill and eat me.

Hearing a barred owl call out in the morning or evening is honestly one of my favorite sounds in the woods.

I absolutely love the animal.

Having said that, I would love to kill one big one and have it mounted. Would be an incredible mount. Maybe have a field mouse in its talons or something.

I'd have a hard time getting fired up to go blast some owls. Highlight of any woods activity is seeing or hearing an owl. Always makes me pause and grin.
