As soon as everyone with an AR starts getting tactical training, that same group will predictably flip the frick out.

Better believe the media is always looking for connections to anyone engaging in actual gunfighting classes. It's a shame so many people, including many gun owners, associate defensive shooting competence with just how to load a gun and squeeze trigger.

They love speaking in feel good platitudes. "These people need proper training" is always some mindless nonsense that they throw out there are as a solution. Guess what, Johnny Gangbanger (the group responsible for the majority of gun deaths) won't give a damn about the training requirement just how he doesn't care about possessing an illegal weapon. They want people to be trained but just not trained too well.

You've confused psychiatrists and psychics. They are not the same thing. One is a doctor. The other claims to know the future. Only the psychic is "capable" of telling the future actions of a person. Doc's can't do it.

Proper training doesn't prevent someone's intent to kill antoher. However, in theory, it would make them exceptionally better at it.

Why do we have a legal drinking age and a legal driving age? I guess those are stupid too...

You have to pass more testing to drive a car than own a gun. I understand a car is dangerous but why are some things okay to make laws and rules but others get people so upset?

I'm sure most people on this board would pass all testing and rules so what's the big deal? You can still have the right own a gun if you're a certain age and pass a test just like your car.

Now I know you can argue there are flaws in the testing and age approach but do you really think the way everything is handled now is correct?

A car is not a constitutional right. And once they start infringing on that right they just take another piece every time. They don't ever put a piece back, but just continue to chip away at the foundation.

Most people would be okay with testing, etc.. If that was it and there was a clear cut future, but there isn't. That is why people are so adamant against further restrictions. Feinsteins quote about being 21 is a clear example of it.

This is where you show you don't understand the difference between a given right and an earned privilege. Guns are a right given by 2A, driving is a privilege from the state to use their roads. You don't need a license to drive on your property.

I do hope you're not serious. A wooden chair can both defend and disable a person wielding a sword. Silly comparison.

Does getting a driver's license involve a psych evaluation?

I'm just trying to say I'm ready to listen to and try to develop options to try and make things safer. We have done it before with other "rights" and some things we got correct and some things we got wrong but I think its worth trying to help. These tragedies seem to be shifting opinions but not everyone.

May not have killed 17 kids but he could most certainly kill one or two.

That's why I love to force them to play the whole scenario out. They quickly realize how fast it eliminates your rights and how their unintended consequences come to fruition.

Yeah. I just meant that even without a gun, the kid was hell bent on killing people. He would’ve found another way. Sure, that was a bit of an exaggeration admittedly.

This plus remind me just how many of these mass shooters were using AR15s legally purchased by 18-20 year olds.

Meaning if your on antipsychotics, then you should be required to have regular checkups with a Dr. if you skip multiple appointments you should be able to buy a gun

The only tricky part of adding mental health to background checks is that background checks are an extremely inefficient method of preventing criminals from getting guns.

I'll link an article from Politifact (a super left-leaning site) that points this out:

LINK /

I don't think adding another complicated layer of regulation to the NICS would make the system more efficient. In my opinion it would bog down the system and squeeze the taxpayers even more.

I do agree that there is a mental health epidemic in the country right now but I don't see this step doing much.

In my opinion, bringing the nuclear family back stronger than ever would fix a lot of societal issues but that would take a lot of time and effort for the US populace.

One pretty common trait of all the past mass shootings was the fact that the shooter had been on antipsychotics.

The background check needs an overhaul. The Texas church shooting and the shooting last week prove that.
