In order to meet the requirements of foster/adoption I have to have a lockable storage container separate from my gun safe to keep ammunition in. What does the OB have to keep their ammo in? Couple cases of shotgun and various amounts of other calibers. Wall locker style would be ideal, but due to wife losing her job due to COVID money is a bit tight. Looking for all other options.

Could you just build a lockable wooden box?

That's what I'm thinking. I have a footlocker my dad built when he was in the Seabees that we have at the foot of the bed. It's huge...like 28" deep and 28x36 so I take some bedding out..and put in the ammo. I just wanted to see what other options were out there.

Most plastic ammo cans from the big box stores have holes in them for a padlock.

I second your recommendation. They carry up to 85 lbs, have two spots to put locks, and are dimensioned so that you can stack individual boxes or the smaller aftermarket MTM brand boxes within nice and neat. Those ammo cans fashioned to look like military issue hardware are too small. You'd have to buy 3 for every MTM, and they cost about the same individually. For $20, they are a great deal and a fine solution for the OP's needs.

My gun safe has additional threaded holes that allow to bolt a smaller safe on top, I bolted a light duty steel locking cabinet on top for extra ammo and reloading dies. Ran rubber door gasket to seal it better and lined the bottom with VCI liner I use for my tool boxes.

to meet the requirements of foster/adoption

Here is to wishing you and your wife prayers and success during this journey. People that adopt and or foster have all of my respect. It is a damn shame it costs so much to do this, while getting an abortion is a drop in the bucket for those that cannot handle their parental duties.

Not sure if this is out of your budget or not but cabelas/bass pro has a nice ammo cabinet.

An old gym locker would make a durable and cheap cabinet.

From September through February I keep mine mostly rolling around in the floor of the truck or the duck boat...sometimes they will find their way into the washing machine or dryer...damned things are migrant in nature that way...

I use MTM case-gard ammo cans. They come in a number of different sizes for different calibers. They are gasketed and water-resistant. Toss in a couple of packs of rechargable silica gel and your ammo is well stored. You just slap a padlock on them and move them wherever you need to and you should be good. MTM also makes ammo boxes that go in the ammo cans. For instance, the 9mm cans hold ten 100 round boxes. So, I can buy ammo in bulk, box it up, and just grab a box or two out of the can when I'm heading to the range.

ETA: I see I'm not the only fan of MTM products.

I use stack on cabinets. Picked up two of them off Craigslist. I see them on FB Marketplace all the time.

Dad was a SW2 in the Orange, TX reserve unit from the mid 70s until the mid 80s. He left the Seabees after PNA the SW1 test 7 times and went into the USMC reserve unit in Lafayette, and then later went Active as the Lake Charles Recruiter for the Corps. He finally picked up his E6 meritoriously there.

He supported MCB7 and MCB121 in Vietnam. I don't know the Orange Reserve Unit Battalion. He was always in an MCB. My sister was a YN in an Amphib Seabee unit there in Orange for a while.

really any lockable box..

these sell for $15 or less...and are made for ammo storage.

even a lockable fridge works well if you want something more inconspicuous. (broken ones can be found for..practically free)
