Looking to buy my first shotgun. Budget is no more than $1,000, preferably less. I only go duck hunting 1-2 times per year so I'm just looking for something that holds up well in a closet the majority of the time and will fire when I take it out. Had recommendations for the A300, which is at the top end of the budget, but willing to spend that if it is better than the others at or under its price point.

I am okay with a pump over a semi but would prefer a semi. I would rather have a reliable gun over anything else.

I have searched for a thread on this and found a few from a couple of years ago. I don't know much about this whole industry and how technology changes year to year which is why I am starting this. Any help is appreciated.

Winchester Sx4 or A300 for gas gun. Franchi Affinity for inertia. if that is the price range.

What Borris said, maybe add a stoeger into the mix. Find the one that fits you best.

I really like my Benelli SuperNova.

It's not an expensive beauty queen so I don't get to concerned when it rattles around in the bottom of the boat.

It's a brute that takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

I would go to a good gun store and see what is most comfortable.

THIS. Go try them on. You may be surprised where that leads you.

I did this with three requirements:

1. Light and fast
2. Gas operated
3. Under $1200

Winchester SX3 checked all the boxes, and was under $1000 and had my preferred camo pattern to boot. The Browning Gold shouldered a little better, but it was heavier. Don't think they make the Gold anymore though.

I tried on the Winchester SX4 once while passing through a store and it shouldered better than the SX3. Hope this helps.

Anyone have an opinion on Remington 870 Wingmaster synthetic stock 12 gauge? I might buy one used, it would be just for shooting clays and whatnot. I don’t hunt.

I would go auto for clays. Depending on what year that 870 is it could be the most dependable gun you can own or junk.

My first gun and I still love it, although I use a Browning A5 more for hunting these days.

They're damn fine shotguns. It's a hunting shotgun through and through. I wouldn't by one to shoot competitively with, but everybody oughta own one.

I duck hunted with a Benelli Nova for many years. Went from an 870 to the Nova and now am shooting a Stoeger M3500 Semiauto.

Never had a problem with any of these shotguns.

Greenhead said it best. Depending upon the year and upkeep, they can be the finest hunting shotgun you'll own or dogshit and everywhere in between. The old Wingmasters were absolutely awesome. I've got one from the 70's that was my first gun as a kid. I've run god only knows how many 2 3/4" shells through that thing. Probably closer to 50,000 than 0. It's action is like glass. I've never had a single problem with it. All stock. Short clean stroke so it's very fast follow up. I have multiple barrels in multiple chokes for this one as well as an extension tube for the sawed off version of it. Plus the original walnut stocks for these were top knotch. My brother had one that was just jaw dropping beautiful.

I also have a post 2000's plastic 3" 870 that I'd say is barely the same breed of gun. It's clunky. The action seems to have spots of resistance that are simply not there in the older one. Works fine, but it's a tool, not a piece of art. The older one is art.

As I said earlier…go to a shop and shoulder a few, etc. and get a feel for what feels best.

I’d also take a look on shotgun fitting on YouTube. I think Target Focused Life has some excellent videos on the subject.

Different shotguns fit everyone differently. You have to remember you POINT a shotgun and your eye is basically the rear sight. If the gun doesn’t fit you at least decently, it will throw your accuracy off.

You’ve gotten several good suggestions on shotgun models to shoulder at the store.

Personally, I’ve always liked a Beretta A300 Outlander as my beater gun. But, I don’t find the finish of the Outlander all that great. I have to at least wipe it down every single trip.
Another good series of guns are the Super X series by Winchester. I have an old SX2 that’s had thousands of rounds through it with zero problems.

Both those guns fit me almost perfectly. If I were getting a new shotgun today, I’d look hard at a SX4.

Bought my son the A300 and dove hunted S Texas last 2 yrs, put hundreds of rounds through it and not a single hang up. Really impressed with how smooth it shoots.
